DUNTON WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands at the junction of High Street and Chapel Street, in the grounds of St Mary Magdelene Parish Church, by the gate. It takes the form of a square obelisk of polished red granite situated on a square base. There are 14 names listed for World War 1 only.

Son of Benjiman and Elizabeth Brown, of Boot Lane, Dunton. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 2 C.

Private 33616, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action in France Wednesday 5th October 1917, aged 21. Born and resident Dunton, enlisted Bedford. Son of David and Mary Elizabeth Chessum, of Newton, Dunton, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Formerly 2054, Bedfordshire Yeomanry. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Son of George and Louise Gale, of Cross Roads, Dunton, Beds; husband of Edie May Gale, of 6, West Cottage, Shortmead St., Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Formerly G/32505, Middlesex Regiment. Born and resident Dunton, enlisted Ampthill. Son of Susan Jeeves, of Dunton, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Buried in PUCHEVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY, Somme, France. Grave VI. B. 40.
