WEST WYCOMBE WAR MEMORIAL

The West Wycombe War Memorial is a simple stone cross on a stepped base in the parish churchyard. It bears an inscription but no names. Inside the parish church of St Lawrence is a marble plaque bearing the names of the 75 men who died in the First World War – this includes no less than 6 sets of brothers.

Private Sidney Allen (265232) of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, 5th Battalion. He was born in Princes Risborough, Bucks, and was killed in action on 27th April 1917 aged 21. He is recorded on the Arras Memorial, France, on Bay 6 and 7. He lived in Sands, Bucks, and enlisted in High Wycombe, Bucks. He was the son of Thomas and Selina Allen of New Road, Sands, High Wycombe, Bucks.

He lived in High Wycombe, Bucks, and enlisted in Aylesbury, Bucks. He was the foster son of Ernest W. and Maud M. Hall of "Lord's Mill", Oakridge Road, High Wycombe, Bucks.

Private Wallace Ashby (29932) of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He was born in Rudpage, Bucks, and was killed in action on 9th October 1917 aged 28. He is recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium, on Panel 23 to 28 and 163A. He lived in West Wycombe and enlisted in High Wycombe. He was the son of Alfred and Elizabeth Ashby of Bennett End, Radnage, High Wycombe, Bucks, and the husband of Florence May Ashby of 9 Nursery Waye, Hillingdon Road, Uxbridge, Middlesex.

Driver William Bailey (58340) of the Royal Field Artillery, 99th Brigade Ammunition Col. He was born in West Wickham, Kent, and died on 12th May 1915 at home aged 24. He is buried at West Wycombe Churchyard in a grave on the north boundary. He enlisted in Oxford.

Sergeant Harry Barnett (5065) of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion. He was born in Stokenchurch, Oxon, and was killed in action on 17th February 1915 aged 38. He was the son of John and Ellen Butler of Alexandra, Sands, High Wycombe, Bucks.

Private Harry Wilfred Chilton (29399) of the Grenadier Guards, 5th Reserve Battalion or 3rd Battalion. He was born in Downley Common, Bucks, and died on 24th October 1918 at home aged 21. He is buried in West Wycombe Churchyard in a grave north of the church tower. He enlisted in High Wycombe and was the son of Harry and Emily Chilton of Downley Common, High Wycombe, Bucks.

South African Private Abel Edward Cutler (5280) of the South African Infantry, 4th Regiment. He died on 26th July 1916 aged 32 and is buried in West Wycombe Churchyard in a grave near the north-west gate. He was the son of Abel and Elizabeth Cutler of West Wycombe.

Captain Robert Henry Lindsay Dashwood of the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), 2nd or 3rd Battalion. He was killed in action on 27th May 1918 aged 20 and is recorded on the Soissons Memorial, France. He was the son of Sir Robert Dashwood, 9th Baronet, of West Wycombe Park and of Lady Dashwood (now Mrs. A. R. Fraser) of 23 Alexander Square, London, S.W.3.

Private Walter Apsley Day (15782) of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, 5th Battalion. He was born in West Wycombe in 1896 and was killed in action on 25th September 1915 aged 20. He is recorded on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium, on Panel 37 and 39. He enlisted in High Wycombe, Bucks, and was the son of Dennis and Hannah Day.

Buried in quarries by Champs d'Ering, near Soupir, he is recorded on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France. He lived in Downley, Bucks, and enlisted in Hounslow, Middlesex in March 1899. He served in France and Flanders from 9th to 25th September 1914. He was the son of Henry and the late Emma Maunder and the husband of Ada Susan Maunder.
