and Mrs. Gadsby, of Manea Villa, on Montagu Road, Cambridge,
have received official notice of the death of their son, Pte.
Cyril Frank Gadsby, 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment, in Malaya Camp
on July 9th, 1943.
Pte.
Gadsby was educated at the Perse School, and before the war
was with the firm of Messrs. Arthur Shepherd, Trinity Street.

R.A.F. Sergeant
killed
News has been received of the death on active service of Flight-Sergt.
John Newman Gallyon, second son of Mrs. M. Gallyon, of 166,
Chesterton Wind, and the late Mr. J. P. Gallyon.
Flight-Sergt.Gallyon, who was 25, was a member of the well-known
firm of gun makers in Bridge Street. Before the war he was a
member of the Civil Air Guard, and he joined the R.A.F. at the
outbreak of hostilities. He had seen considerable service over
enemy and enemy-occupied territory.
Educated at the County School and the Technical School, Flight-Sergt.
Gallyon was at one time a member of the Town Rugby Football
Club and of the Town Hockey Club.
He was unmarried.

of Wounds. — Our picture is of Pte. Douglas Graham
Gates, 1st. Cambs. Regiment, whose mother, Mrs. Edith Boyce, of
25, Romsey Terrace, Mill Road, Cambridge, has been officially
informed that he died of wounds at Singapore on February 14th,
1942. This is the first news of him received since the capitulation.
Aged 20, Pte. Oates was formerly employed by Dales Brewery.

F/O. D. R. Gatward
Flying-Officer
D. R. Gatward. who was reported “missing” in these
columns a few days ago, in now known to have lost his life on
December 17th “owing to enemy action.”
He
was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Gatward, of 156, Gilbert
Road, Cambridge. He was educated at the Cambridge and County
School for Boys, and would have proceeded to the Cambridge University
but for the outbreak of war, and he went into the R.A.F. instead.
He was well known for his linguistic abilities, having travelled
on the Continent prior to the war.
After
being commissioned he undertook a course in Russian at the School
of Slavonic and East European Studies, London University, passing
out as a qualified interpreter, It was in this capacity that
he went to Russia in the early part of 1944. His work completed,
Flying-Officer Gatward returned to England, and volunteered
for service on the Western front where he was attached to the
Base Censor staff up to the time of his death.

NEWS has been received in Cambridge of the death on active
service of Sergt. Pilot H. F. Gigney, son of Mrs. Gigney,
of 17, Bentinek Street, Cambridge, and the late Mr. Horace
Gigney.
Sergt. Pilot Gigney, who had had his wings for almost a year,
was aged 22 years. He was a Central School boy and a keen
Rover. On leaving school he joined the Cambridge University
Press, and later became a member of the R.A.F.V.R. He was
called to active service in the R.A.F. at the outbreak of
war.
Whilst in civilian life, Sergt.-Pilot Gigney was a particularly
enthusiastic swimmer, being a member of three clubs—the
Granta, Cambridge Amateurs, and Pitt Press.

Accidentally
Drowned. — Information has been received from Major
Seekings of the death of Pte. Harold James Glasscock, who had
been a prisoner of war in Japan and was accidentally drowned whilst
working on Saigon Docks, Indo-China, at the end of February, 1945.
Pte. Glasscock was the second son of Mrs. G. M. Glasscock, of
16, King's Road, Newnham, and prior to being called up was employed
by the Home and Colonial Stores.

LOSS
Young Airman's Death
in Hospital
The death occurred in a hospital on Friday, after an operation,
of L.A.C. Paul Eric Godfrey, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs.
C. Godfrey, of 14, Halifax Road, Cambridge, at the early age
of 19 years.
Paul was a most estimable fellow and had a host of friends,
by whom the news of his passing has been received with profound
sorrow. He received his education at the Cambridge County
School, was a member of his school Rugby football XV., and
had had a number of games with the Shelford Rugby Football
Club. He joined the R.A.F. in February, 1939, and lived his
whole life for the Service.
Fond of friends, games and laughter, he enjoyed every minute
of living, and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Missing
on Air Operations.—Our picture is of Sergt. Stanley
H. Goodwin, Royal Engineers, aged 24, husband of Mrs. Hilary Goodwin,
of Portersfield Road, Norwich, and only son of Mrs. E. Goodwin,
30, Alpha Terrace, Trumpington. Sergt, Goodwin was reported missing
on September 7th, 1945, while travelling in an aircraft on a special
operation in South-East Asia Command. He was embodied at the outbreak
of war with the Territorial Army, and served in the 287th Field
Company, R.E. He left the Company just before they went to Singapore,
and went to India for special work in Calcutta in August, 1944.
Before the war he was draughtsman for the South Cambs. R.D.C.

was reported missing on June 13th, 1944, during operations connected

age, is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Green of 28, Westley Gates,
A Six-Mile-Bottom, Cambs. He attended Borough Green School and
has served ten years with the Royal Navy.

NEWS has been received in Cambridge that Sergt. Edward Ralph
Hall, 21, of the R.A.F., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hall,
of 61, Burleigh Street, is missing as a result of night operations.
Sergt. Hall was educated at the Perse School, where, at the
age of 15, he broke the records for the high jump and the quarter-mile.
He was apprenticed in London and later returned to Cambridge,
where he was in business with his father. He joined the R.A.F.V.R.
and was called up on the outbreak of war, serving as a wireless
operator and air gunner.
“We were expecting him home on leave this week,”
Mrs. Hall said to day, “and when the telegram came we
thought it was to say when he was coming.”
Besides being an active member of the Shelford Athletic Club,
Hall was a popular member of the Fitzroy Social Club.

Corporal Francis Sadler Halliday, only son of Mr. and Mrs. T.

occurred last week, was well-known in Cambridge sporting circles.

was born in Cambridge and, after receiving his education at
the County School, worked in the Public Health Department at
the Guildhall. He joined the Royal Engineers at the beginning
of Oct., 1939, and at the time of his death was a full corporal.
He was 21 years of age.

Private Ron Hammond
News has just reached Mrs. R. Hammond of 10, Ainsworth Street,
Cambridge, that her husband Pte. Ron Hammond, 2nd Cambridgeshire
Regimenty, has died as a prisoner of war in Japanese hands.
He was in Thai Camp. This is the first news Mrs. Hammond has
received of her husband since the fall of Singapore. Thirty
- two years of age, Pte. Hammond attended St. Luke’s School,
and was afterwards employed as a painter and decorator, being
with Mr. F. H. Start, of Sturton Street before he joined up
three years and four months ago.

that her husband, Gunner Harris, has been killed. In action in
the Middle East. He was the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. C.
Harris, of Llanmartin Rectory, Newport, Mon. Educated at Shrewsbury
and St. John's College, Cambridge, where in 1926 he captained
the second hockey eleven, he was well-known and popular at Trumpington,
where prior to volunteering in 1940, he was the licensee of the
Green Man Inn.

R.A.F. on a short service commission.
He was a well-known member of the Cambridge Town Rowing Club.

Cherry Hinton, that their son, Sergt.-Pilot G. B. Hawkes, R. A.
F.; has been killed on active service. Aged 20 in October last,
Sergt.-Pilot Hawkes attended the Cambridge Central School, and
on leaving was employed at Selwyn College and then in the office
of the Norman Cement Works. He was a keen member of the A.T.C.,
and joined the R.A.F, in 1941. Part of his training took place
in Canada.

ship in which he was travelling as a prisoner of war was sunk.
Pte. Hayward was educated at the Roman Catholic School, Union
Road, and before the war he was employed at Downing College.

A Territorial before being called up for war service, Pte. Hibbitt
was attached to the 1st Cambs. Regiment, and had been a prisoner
since the fall of Singapore.

was sunk on September 12th, 1944. Pte High was the son of
Mrs. E. High, of Yarmouth and before the war he was employed

Killed
in Action.—Mrs. Hobson, of 48, Searle Street, Cambridge,
has just received the sad news that her husband, Gunner William
John (Jack) Hobson, of the Royal Artillery, was killed in action
on April 20th while serving in Western Europe. During his service
in the Royal Artillery he took part in the Defence of Britain,
and several months ago was drafted overseas. He was in his 35th,
year, and in addition to his widow, leaves one little boy age
seven years. Before joining the Forces he was employed at the
Cambridge University Press. He was son-in-law of Mr. and the late
Mrs. Webb, of 200, Histon Road, Cambridge. A brother of, Gunner
Hobson was killed just before the end of the last war, his home
then being 13Great Eastern Street, Cambridge.

School boy, previously reported missing has now been reported
killed in action on May 6th. He was Pte. James Joseph Rutterford
Hogg, Beds. and Herts. Regiment, husband of Mrs. Rutterford
Hogg. of 119. East Road, Cambridge. Aged 21, he was the son
of Mrs. Everard. of the George IVth, East Road. When at the
County School he was a keen member of the O.T.C., and he joined
the Forces in 1940.

Baronet
Airman Now Presumed Dead. —Previously reported
missing, Flying Officer Sir Chandos Wren Hoskyns, R.A.F.V.R.,
is now officially presumed to have lost his life in air operations
over Norway on April 3rd last. Aged 21, he was the eldest son
of the late Rev. Sir E. C. Hoskyns and of Lady Hoskyns, of Millington.
Road, Cambridge. He succeeded to the title when he was 13 on his
father's death in 1937. Sir Chandos was educated at King's College
Choir School and Winchester. He joined the R.A.F.V.R. in March,
1942, and his duties included dropping supplies to the “under
ground movement” in Norway and towing gliders. There will
be a memorial service in St. Mary's-the Less Church, Cambridge,
on Wednesday, December 19th, at 3 p.m., when all friends will
be welcome.

Former
Cambridge Man Killed.—Our picture is of Lieut.-Commander
(E) Leslie Herbert Coppins, R.N.V.R., only son of Mr. and Mrs.
Hughes Coppins, of Clacton (and formerly of “The Hermitage,”
Silver Street, Cambridge), who has died on active. He was on a
test trip and it is believed that his boat struck a mine, and
there were only two a survivors. Lieut.-Cmdr. Coppins attended
the Central School and was also a chorister at Pembroke College.
His principal sports were swimming and motoring and he and his
father were both members of the Cambridge Swimming Club and the
Cambridge and County Motor Club. Prior to the war he was with
Davey Paxman and Co., of Colchester, and was on the Diesel Development
Staff. At the outbreak of war he was in Turkey for about ten months
for his firm, and came home through Italy a few days before war
was declared with that country. The date of death is presumed
to be May 12th, 1945, through the boat, a M.G.B., striking a mine
off Norway.

MR. and Mrs. H. Hunt, of 8, Darwin Drive, Cambridge, received
news yesterday that their eldest son, Harry Ronald Hunt, Royal
Engineers, died from cholera on July 12th, 1943; at a Malaya
camp while a prisoner of war in Japanese hands.
Born in August, 1921, he was educated at the Silver Street and
Needham Schools, Ely, and at the Technical School before entering
the employ of Messrs. Coulson as a plumber
Mrs. Dant, of 69, Darwin Drive, has also received news of the
death of her second son, Sapper William A. Dant, in a Japanese
prisoner of war camp in the Far East.
Mr. Jack Dant, Mrs. Dant's eldest son, has already been posted
as missing.

received news that their son, Flying-Officer Lawrence Goddard
Hurst, is reported, missing from air operations in South-Eastern
Asia. He was a navigator.
Twenty-nine years of age, Flying 0fficer Hurst was educated
at the County High School for Boys and was employed at the Union
Assurance Company, Ltd., Regent Street, before joining up in
1940. He was previously in the R.A.F.V.R. He served in England
until last June, when he went overseas.
A keen sportsman, Flying 0fficer Hurst played cricket for the
Camden Club, and Rugby for Shelford.

of 43, Cavendish Road. Cambridge. That their only son, Sergt.
Dennis Sidney Imber, R.A.F., has been killed in action.

21, Sergt. Imber was, before the war,a member of the staff of
the Cambridge Co-operative Society, and joined the R.A.F.V.R.
in April, 1939. He was well known as a member of the Beehives,
having rowed and played cricket and football for them.
