From Andy Pay's research into the Marquis de Ruvigny' s Roll of Honour Volume 1, Part 1 , Page 150, the following:

GEORGE, Ernest Frederick, Corporal , number 51, A Company, 8th Battalion (90th Winnipeg Rifles), 2nd Brigade, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Eldest son of Arthur Atherton George of Leverington, near Wisbech, by his wife Sarah, sister of Captain Thomas Elson-Ivey, 1st Oxfordshire and Buckingham L.I. (taken prisoner at Kut)and dau of Samuel Ivey, of Bristol. Born Leverington co. Cambridge23-9-1889, educated church school, wisbech. Was employed for five years with Messrs Dawbarn & Sons, Wisbech, went to Winnipeg, Canada in April 1912, and worked on the Canadian Pacific Railroad, volunteered on the outbreak of war and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Came over with the first contingent in nov 1914, trained at Valcartier camp, Quebec and Salisbury, went to France 18-2-1915 and was reported missing after the heavy fighting at Ypres 22 to 24-4-1915.

On this occasion the 8th Battalion , commanded by Lieut-Col Lispett held the extreme left of the brigade position at the most critical moment. The Battalion was expelled from the trenches early on friday morning (23rd April) by an emission of poisonous gas, but recovering in three quaters of an hour, it counter-attacked, re took the trenches it had abandoned, and bayoneted the enemy; and after the third brigade had been forced to retire, Lieut-Col Lispett held his position , though his left was in the air, until two British Regiments filled the gap on saturday night.

It would seem George was wounded and taken prisoner, for according to a postcard received from Corporal W.S. Poser of the same battalion (himself a prisoner) George died of wounds or gas poisoning, in the red cross hospital at Roulers, 26-4-1915.

He was unmarried, his younger brother private John Robert George, served with th first Northamptonshire Regiment in France aug 1914 to march 1915 and is now (1916) with the third battalion in Gillingham.

Yesterday (Thursday) morning brought the tragic news to Mrs. Cooper, of Ivy Cottage, Leverington Common, that her husband. Driver Stanley Cooper, of the Royal Engineers, died while a prisoner of war in a Thailand camp during the Japanese occupation.

Driver Cooper joined the Territorials during June, 1939, being mobilised on September 1st, 1939. He was married on Mar. 3rd, 1940, and went abroad during October, 1941. He was reported missing on February 14th, 1942, two cards since being received from him, the latest dated February, 1943. Dvr. Cooper died on May 30th. 1943. He was previously employed at Curry's, High-street, Wisbech, and was well known both in Wisbech and in Leverington.

In June, 1940—more than 15 montns ago—Pte. William Arthur Diggins, of the Suffolk Regiment, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Diggins, of Mill House, Leverington Common, was reported missing.For over a year the Red Cross tried to trace him, but without success. Through those long months Mr. and Mrs. Diggins have waited, and hoped that their son was safe. Now they have received official notification from the War Office that their son was killed in action on the Western Front in. May, 1940. But they still have faith and hone that he will be restored safely to them.

Pte. Diggins, whose 26th birthday was in May of this year, volunteered for the Army in July, 1939, before the outbreak of war. Before joining up he was employed at Mr. Whiting's farm, Fox-lane, Leverington. He has two younger brothers serving in the Forces—Rowland. who is a Leading Aircraftsman in the Air Force in India, and Harold with the Pioneer Corps in Scotland.

After long years of anxiety, official news has now been received of the fate of Sapper Harry M. Rockett, of the Royal Engineers, formerly of 6, River-terrace, Wisbech, who was reported missing in the Far East on January 26th, 1942.

A letter from the War Office to his mother, Mrs. E. M. Rockett, of Laburnum Cottage, Lutton-road, Long Sutton, states that lists of casualties in the Malayan campaign have been received, showing that Sapper Rockett was missing after his unit was in action at Sengarrang on January 26th, 1942. “In view of this report and of the long lapse of time during which no news has been received,” the letter adds, “the Department has reluctantly and with deep regret reached the conclusion that your son must have lost his life during the fighting at Sengarrang. It is consequently being recorded officially that Sapper Rockett is presumed to have been killed in action on, or shortly after, January 26th, 1942.”

Sapper Rockett was 24 years of age and joined the Army on the day war broke out.

In civilian life he was employed by Messrs. S. Shippey & Son.

Note: Able Seaman Tawn, a Royal Navy Diver was Killed in Falmouth Inner Harbour, whilst defusing an unexploded Land Mine, dropped by parachute from a Luftwaffe Bomber. Along with Able Seaman Tawn, Six other men also lost their lives. All are buried in Falmouth Cemetery, with the exception of one, named Sutherland, whose remains were never found.

It is with deep regret that we announce the death, on active service, of Able Seaman Robert George Tawn, aged 25, son of Mrs. Charlotte Maile, of Leverington Common, who was reported missing and presumed killed on March 6th.

He had been in the Navy for 10½ years, being engaged as a diver, was in H.M.S. Ajax during the River Plate action, and last year was awarded the D.S.M. for rendering harmless a German magnetic mine. In addition to this splendid record, Able Seaman Tawn also won the O.B.E.

His mother and step-father last saw him on February 22nd, when he was home on leave. He then told them that he was going to London on March 1st to receive his two medals, but they heard nothing more until they received a telegram reporting that he was missing and presumably killed. This was later confirmed by a letter to his parents, with whom deep sympathy will be felt.
