The Madingley World War 1 memorial is to be found on the south wall in St Mary Magdelene Church, Madingley. It takes the form of a wooden backboard mounted with a bronze plaque containing the names of the men from World War 1 (16 names) and an additional wooden plaque details the name of the only man to give his life in World ar 2. There are also several 19th century memorials within the church

Private 9993, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died of wounds Saturday, 8th May 1915. Born Fressingfield, Suffolk, enlisted Haverhill, Suffolk, resident Madingley. Son of William and Caroline Saxby, of Madingley, Cambs. Buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot VIII. Row C. Grave 8.
POULTER Joseph
Private 7518 "B" Coy. 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment killed in action on Tuesday, 25th May 1915. Age 25. Born Conington, enlisted Elsworth. Son of Benjamin and Sophia Poulter, of The Poplars, Hardwick, Cambridge. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 21. See also Elsworth

KING Frederick aka Fred

JOHNSON Isaac Alfred
Private 14794, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died of wounds Monday, 24th July 1916. Born Madingley 7th October 1894, enlisted Cambridge. Son of Isaac and Alice (nee Todd) Johnson of Madingley. Entered France 25th July 1915. In the 1911 census he is listed as the son of Isaac and Alice, aged 17, a Farm Labourer, born Madingley, resident Park Lane. Madingley. BARLOW Francis Barnett aka Frank
Private 76947, 1st/7th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Died of wounds Monday, 22nd April 1918. Aged 20. Born and resident Madingley, enlisted Cambridge. Son of Charles and Emma Barlow, of Madingley, Cambs. Formerly 176339, Royal Engineers. Buried in WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot XI. Row E. Grave 3A.

ROWNEY James
Lance Corporal 12510, 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died Friday, 8th November 1918. Aged 34. Born Madingley, enlisted Cambridge. Son of Thomas and Eliza Rowney, of The Lodge, Madingley, Cambridge. Buried in NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY, Hessen, Germany. Plot V. Row D. Grave 11.
 
1919
BARLOW Frederick
Private 255517, 426 Agriculutural Company, Labour Corps formerly 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment and The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died of illness 18th February 1919 (registered at Chesterton, Vol. 3B, page 721). Aged 21. Son of Charles and Emma Barlow, of Madingley, Cambs. Attestation papers show that he was a Farm Labourer, born 4th February 1895 in Girton. Enlisted 5th September 1914 at Cambridge nd had a varied military life. Started in 11th (Service) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment 5th September 1914, posted to the Depot 9th August 1916 then 3rd Battalion 20th January 1917 then transferred tio 28th Infantry Works Battalion, Middlesex Regiment 2nd February 1917, then to the Agricultural Company, The Buffs 6th April 1917 before finally being transferred to the Agricultural Company, Labour Corps 30th June 1917. He was discharged from No. 1 Military Hospital, Canterbury as being no longer phycially fir for war service 18th August 1917 due to Tubercle of Lung first diagnoses May 1917 at Sittingbourne, Kent. He is described as being 5 feet 6 inches, weight 124lbs, girth 36½ inches, fresh complexion, light blue eyes, brown hair; he was classed as Church of England. In the 1911 census he was the son of Thomas and Emma Barlow, aged 13, Farm Labourer, born Girton, resident High Street, Madingley. His British Army WW1 Pension Records exist still.

CARLTON Charles Henry

Private 5775725 6th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment who died on Tuesday, 13th July 1943 as a Japanese Prisoner of War. Age 26. Born and resident Cambridgeshire. Birth registered in the April-June Quarter in the Linton Registratin District, Cambridgeshire; mother's maiden name was Pearson. His baptism took place on 15 July 1917 at Horseheath, son of Charles Henry and Mary Ann Carlton, of Linton; his father was a labourer. Buried in KANCHANABURI WAR CEMETERY, Thailand. Collective grave 10. F. 2-10. L. 4.
