MAPPERLEY COLLIERY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Detailed Information
Compiled & Copyright © Martin Edwards 2005
additional information Grant Shaw

This unusual tiled design shows the 66 names of those workers from the former Mapperley Collieries who died in the Great War. The memorial was formerly attached to the Silver Jubilee Club on Station Road, West Hallam which was once a Miners’ Welfare Club. The club was recently demolished (2005) and the Parish Council insisted on its preservation; it has now been re-erected in West Hallam village beside the main memorial.

Extract from Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal - Friday 30 July 1920:

"WEST HALLAM. Opening of a Memorial Hall.-On Saturday (sic) Saturday afternoon. Mr. W. H. Quarrell (chairman the Mapperley Colliery Co.) formally opened memorial hall at West Hallam. The directors of the Mapperley Colliery Company have presented the ground on which the memorial hall stands, about two acres in area, and have laid out a large portion as tennis courts and a howling green. The workmen and officials of the company have erected and furnished the building at a cost of £2,000."
