BLACKDOWN WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial can be found within Holy Trinity Church, Blackdown, Dorset and takes the form of a ramed rectangular tablet with black lettering. It contains seven names for World War 1 and three for World War 2. A new stone tablet was erected and dedicated in 2004 to replace a wooden one destroyed by fire in 1961.

Private 513675, 1st/14th (County of London) Battalion (London Scottish), London Regiment. Killed in action 29 March 1917. Enlisted and resident Southend. Son of Robert and Suzanne Burns; husband of Winifred Lucy Yvonne Burns, of Racedown, Crewkerne, Somerset. Buried in Achincourt Road Cemetry, Achincourt, Pas de Calais, France. Plot/Row/Section A. CADDY Henry [Charles]
Private 10899, 5th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. Killed in action 16 August 1917. Aged 28. Born and enlisted Broadwindsor, Dorset, resident Crewkerne. Son of Alice Hussey, of Kitwhistle, Blackdown, Crewkerne, Somerset. No known grave. Commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 92
DUNSTER [William] Sidney
Able Seaman R/5490, Nelson Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Killed or died as a direct result of enemy action 17 December 1917. Aged 30. Born 21 January 1888 in Kitwhistle, Blackdown, Nr. Crewkerne. Son of Annie Jane Lane (formerly Dunster), of Pipehouse, Blackdown, Crewkerne, Somerset. In the 1891 census he was aged 3, an only son of Charles and Annie L Dunster, resident Crockers, Birdsmore Gate, Broadwinsor, Beaminster, Dorset. In the 1901 census he is a baorder, aged 13, a domestic stable boy, born Dorset, resident with his employer at Duck Street, Broadwinsor, Beaminster, Dorset. Buried in an isolated grave now unlocated. HALLETT Thomas [George] aka Tom
Private 8383, 2nd Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. Killed in action in Mesopotmia 13 January 1916. Born Sydling, Dorset, enlisted Sherborne, Dorset. Buried in Kut War Cemetery, Iraq. Section G. Grave 12.
KNIGHT Andrew [J]
Private 27618, "B" Company, 1st/4th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. Died 5 January 1919, Aged 22. Son of Robert William and Mernia Knight of Blackdown Dorset. Buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalmaria, Greece. Grave 1180
LANGFORD Alfred [Charles]
Rifleman 897299, 34th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment. Died of wounds 31 October 1918. Aged 38. Born Broadwindsor, Dorset, enlisted Bridport, resident Charmouth.
