MERCER

John William Edward

Sergeant 202369, 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 6th August 1917 in France & Flanders. Age 33. Born Plaistow, enlisted and resident Southend-on-Sea. Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mercer, of Westcliff-on-Sea; husband of Mary Mercer, of II, Tudor Rd., Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. Buried in FEUCHY BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Grave I. D. 9.

MERCER, John William Edward, Sergeant, # 202369, 2nd Essex Regiment

Sergeant Mercer was born at Stock, Plaistow, and was brought to Southend as a boy, living with his wife Mary at 11, Tudor Road, Prittlewell. He was employed as a postman at Southend Post Office for fifteen years, and, was a private in the Territorials for eight. He was called up in August 1914, and served as an Instructor of Musketry prior to going abroad, serving four months in France with another Battalion. He was killed on the night of 6/7th August 1917, and was buried at Feuchy. Lieutenant A.C.Hyde wrote the following leeter to his wife: "It is my painful duty to inform you that your husband Sergeant Mercer was killed on the night of August 7th. He met his death bravely. I understand from Sergeant Page, who was with him when he died, that his last thoughts were of you and the children, and his last words were " Send this photograph to my dear wife and write to her." He was buried at ............. The officers and men of the Battalion will share your grief. He is a great loss to the Regiment and company, as he was a good and brave man and a soldier. Sergeant H.Walford wrote: " Ted had been my chum for eight years and out here he and I cheered each other in the hard times we had been through, and my own grief at his loss is deep. He met his death doing his duty." Sergeant A.Page wrote: "It is with the deepest regret and sympathy that i am writing to let you know of your husbands sudden end, and his last words "Chum, let my wife know, I am going with a good heart." It is mt duty as a comrade to let you know we were on a carrying party up to the trenches and the enemy turned a machine gun on us and caught us before he could get down. I heard him shout and ran back, got him under some cover and bandaged him up, but he was caught very badly and I could see, poor chap, that he was going. I sent for a stretcher, but before he could get there he passed away and I sat there behind him with a full heart. I can tell you! , as he had been my chum since he joined the Battalion, and we always got on well together. So you can realise how it made me feel."

He was 34 years old and is commemorated on the Prittlewell War Memorial and on the family grave in Sutton Road Cemetery.
