Son of Mrs. W. Stocken, of 156, Cottenham Rd., Holloway, London. Buried in NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY, Kassel, Hessen, Germany. Plot V. Row E. Grave 7.

Note: The cemetery was begun by the Germans in 1915 for the burial of prisoners of war who died at the local camp. During the war almost 3,000 Allied soldiers and civilians, including French, Russian and Commonwealth, were buried there In 1922-23 it was decided that the graves of Commonwealth servicemen who had died all over Germany should be brought together into four permanent cemeteries. Niederzwehren was one of those chosen and in the following four years, more than 1,500 graves were brought into the cemetery from 190 burial grounds in Baden, Bavaria, Hanover, Hesse and Saxony. There are now 1,796 First World War servicemen buried or commemorated in the Commonwealth plot at Niederzwehren. This total includes special memorials to 13 casualties buried in other cemeteries in Germany whose graves could not be found. Note: In 1922-23 it was decided that the graves of Commonwealth servicemen who had died all over Germany should be brought together into four permanent cemeteries. Berlin South-Western was one of those chosen and in 1924-25, graves were brought into the cemetery from more than 140 burial grounds in eastern Germany. There are now 1,176 First World War servicemen buried or commemorated in the Commonwealth plot at Berlin South-Western Cemetery. The total includes special memorials to a number of casualties buried in other cemeteries in Germany whose graves could not be found. Ordinary Seaman, S.S. Empire Steel (Liverpool), Merchant Navy. Died after his ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat on 24th March 1942. Aged 21. Son of Arthur and Lily Clayton, of Chipping, Hertfordshire. No known grave. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London. Panel 45.

Note: SS Empire Steel was an 8,138 ton British tanker torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-123 (under the command of Reinhard Hardegen) on 24th March 1942, position 36-34o N, 64-02o W. Bound from Baton Rouge to United Kingdom with a cargo of high octane gas and kerosene. Ship owned by Bank Line, Ltd. 39 of crew of 47 were missing. 8 picked up by tug EDWARD J. MORAN March 28 and landed at Little Creek, C.G. Station, April 1. All survivors were sent to Marine Hospital, Norfolk.
