Leonard Bundy 1884-1915

Leonard Bundy was born 12th January 1884, son of George and Mary Bundy, of Eaton Socon, St. Neots, Hunts. He Enlisted 23rd September 1914 by which time his father was dead. At the time of his enlistment he was employed as a hospital attendant. He attained the rank of Corporal, 17083 No. 4 Coy, 7th Bn., Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regt.) and died on Saturday, 24th April 1915, aged 31. He is commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 18 - 28 - 30.

From his various papers we can see that when he enlisted he was 5ft 11½ins, with a 39 inch chest. He had a scar on his left elbow. His eyes were grey and his hair brown. His religion was Church of England.

The Casualty - Active Service Form shows that Leonard was made up to Corporal on 25th September 1914 and then on 24th April 1915 he was wounded and missing in action. By nthe 31st May 1916, for official purposes, he was presumed to have died on or since 24th April 1915.

The offical memorial details were despatched in 1921 and 1922. The details being recorded on a single document. The acknowledgement for the memorial was also included.

Sadly all that remained was his record of pay. Many men died and no remains were found. For these men there is no official grave just their names on a memorial, but they are not forgotten.....
