Private 2327, 3rd Infantry Battalion, 7th Reinforcements, Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.). Awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal (D.C.M.); cited Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, 4 February 1919 on page 125 at position 19, and London Gazette 3 September 1918 on page 10367 at position 1. Embarkation age given as 18 but he enlisted 26 May 1915 under age at 16. Embarked at Sydney, New South Wales, on H.M.A.T. A67, "Orsova", 14 July 1915. Son of George Abraham of Hail Weston, St. Neots, Hunts. Religious denomination Church of England. Enlisted in Australia, having left home in Hail Weston/St Neots aged 15 to travel to Australia to work on a farm near Tenterfield, New South Wales. Lived a long life in Australia, finally passing away at age 92.

Percy John Thomas

Private 22998, 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 10 August 1917. Born and resident Hail Weston, Hunts, enlisted Bedford. *** No CWGC entry ***

Driver, Royal Field Artillery. Joining in October 1916, he was drafted to the Western Front in June of the following year, and there saw much heavy fighting. He took part in the Battles of Ypres, Passchendaele, Cambrai and the Marne, and other important engagements in various sectors, and served also through the Retreat of 1918. He was invalided home in August of that year suffering from appendicitis, and after his recovery served at Edinburgh until his demobilisation in March 1919. Served and returned. Private 22553, London Regiment. Born Hail Weston 17 January 1898. Captured 15 September 1917 at St. Julien, held in Dulmen Prisoner of War camp, previously held in Dendermonde POW Camp. Next of kin Mrs. J. Barnett, of Hail Weston.

"BARNETT E E, Private Royal Fusiliers. He joined in October 1916, and in the following year was drafted to France. In this theatre of war he was in action at the Battle of Ypres (III.), and was taken prisoner in September 1917. Whilst in captivity in Germany he was stationed at Gustrow Camp in Westphalia, and suffered many privations. He was repatriated after the Armistice and returned home for his demobilisation in October 1919. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals. Hail Weston near Huntingdon, Hunts. Attested 11 October 1916 at Huntingdon, aged 18 years 7 months (actually 16 years 7 months), born Hail Weston, Huntingdonshire, resident Sharpes Barns, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire, a Groom by trade, height 5 feet 57/10 inches, weight 112lbs, chest 33½ inches. Son of Walter Barnett, of Sharpes Barns, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire.

Born Hail Weston, Huntingdonshire, height 5 feet 3 inches, weight 123lbs, joined Army Reserve 8 December 1915, mobilised 24 May 1917, posted 25 May 1917. Prisoner of War captured 23 March 1918 at Fussy, interned in Sprottau. Married Winifred Mabel Sanford 10 December 1914 in Hail Weston. One son, Reginald Artghur Hancock born 7 June 1915 in hail Weston. Served in France from 6 August 1917.

In November 1917, however, he was transferred to Italy, but, after fighting on the Piave and Asiago Plateaux, returned to France and was again in action on the Somme and at Amiens and Cambrai, and was wounded in October 1918. He afterwards served with the Army of Occupation at Cologne and Coblenz, and was demobilised on his return home in September 1919 holding the General Service and Victory Medals. "Having previously served in the Army for four years, he re-enlisted in December 1914, and was retained on important duties at home until July 1916, when he was sent to France. There he fought in the Battle of the Somme and in engagements at Thiepval and Pozières, and was wounded in action in August 1916 and invalided to England. From January to September 1917 he served in Ireland, and in November 1917 was discharged as medically unfit for further military duties. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals. Gunner, Royal Garrison Artillery. "In October 1916 he joined the Army, but was retained on important work in the repair shops at Prees Heath until March 1918, when he embarked for France. On that front he was in action in the Béthune, the Somme and Le Cateau sectors, and in the final Allied Advance. Private 22998, 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action Friday 10th August 1917 in France & Flanders. Born and resident Hail Weston, enlisted Bedford. Buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave LXV. E. 12.

'He volunteered in February 1915, and later in the same year was drafted to France. There he took part in much heavy fighting at the Battles of Loos, the Somme, Albert (where he was slightly wounded), Arras, Vimy Ridge and Messines. He was unfortunately killed in action during the Battle of Ypres (III). on August 10th, 1917, and was entitled to the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
