EAST LANGDON WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial can be found in St Augustine's Parish Church, East Langdon, and is in the form of a brass plaque hanging by the Chancel arch. The plaque is obviously being cared for by a kind local – it is highly polished and looks terrific.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

LAMING

Walter John

Private PO/13819, Royal Marines Light Infantry (R.M.L.I). H.M.S “Bulwark”. Died 26th November 1914 aged 27 years. Son of Henry Richard and Amy Laming, of 4 Station Cottages, Martin Mill. Ringwould, Kent. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire. Panel 6.

The Bulwark was a London Class battleship that blew up in the River Medway off Sheerness in Kent. Over 700 men lost their lives in this disaster. Interestingly this man also lost his life on the “Bulwark” – Private PO/7901 John Alfred LAMING. Royal Marines Light Infantry (R.M.L.I). H.M.S “Bulwark”. Died 26th November 1914. His name does NOT appear on the East Langdon civic war memorial.

Albert Charles

Private G/4913, “D” Company 2nd Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 24th May 1915. Age 19. Born East Langdon. Enlisted Dover. Resided East Langdon. Son of Frederick Walter and Annie Susannah Dixon, of East Langdon, Ringwould, Kent. Commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ieper, Belgium.

Private TF/9503, 7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Formerly (G/26761) 6th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Died 10th September 1916. Born Martin Hill, Kent. Enlisted Faversham. Buried London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, Somme, France. Grave 5.H.3.

FINNIS

Arthur Albert

Corporal L/9320, 6th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 7th October 1916. Age 23. Born East Langdon. Enlisted Canterbury. Resided East Langdon. Son of, Arthur Albert and Ellen Louisa Finnis, of Wheatsheaf Cottage, Martin, Ringwould, Kent. Served in India with the 2nd Battalion Buffs. Proceeded to France January 1915. Twice previously wounded. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier & Face 5D.

Private, 1st Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 10th October 1916. Born St Margarets-at-Cliffe. Enlisted Dover. Resided Dover. Commemorated Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, Somme, France. Special Memorial 59.

Private 30133, 2/5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Formerly 33579 East Surrey Regiment. Died 10th September 1917. Born East Langdon. Enlisted Dover. Resided East Langdon. Buried Ramscapplle Road Military Cemetery, Nieuwpoort, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave I.BA.19.

Private G/12584, 7th Battalion, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Died 30th September 1916. Age 31. Born Folkestone. Enlisted Dover. Resided Dover. Son of Mr & Mrs Marsh, of Folkestone, Kent. Husband of, Mildred E. Marsh, of 3 Bonsor Road, Folkestone. Buried Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme France. Grave I.C.14.

Robert Reginald

Boy 1st Class, H.M.S “Pembroke”, Chatham Royal Naval Base. Died 21st April 1918. Age 18. Son of, Mr R Atkins, of Swanton Mill, Mersham, Ashford, Kent. Buried Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery, Kent. Grave (Naval) 28.1465.

George William

Lance Corporal G/8091, 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Died 18th September 1918. Born Maidstone. Enlisted Calcutta, India. Commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 6.
