DORRINGTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

There are two types of memorial for Dorrington plus Rolls of Honour. There are memorials in the bell tower and in the church of St James and in Ebenezer Wesleyan Reform Chapel. The memorials in the bell tower were originally in Wesleyan Chapel. The three sets of memorials are nearly identical in design and with the number of names listed. There is also a Roll fo Honour to those men who served in World War 1 and those who served in World War 2.

In honoured and grateful memory of the brave men of Dorrington, Lincolnshire who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of King and Country in the Great War 1914 – 1919.

Private 201439. 2/4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 8th June 1917, aged 24 years. Son of George and Elizabeth Asher of Dorrington, Lincs. Born North Rauceby, enlisted Sleaford and resident Dorrington, Lincs. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 1C.

CARROTTE

Frederick Henry

Lance Corporal 45124. Z Coy, 15th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Died of wounds 26th August 1917, aged 26 years. Son of Charles and Margaret Carrotte of Freiston Drive, Dorrington, Lincs. Husband of Lizzie Carrotte (nee Harby) of Sleaford, Lincs. Born Ruskington, enlisted Sleaford and resident Ruskington, Lincs. Commemorated Tincourt New British Cemetery. I.E.9.

CLARKE

Charles Guy

Private 1710. Lincolnshire Yeomanry. Died at sea 3rd November 1915. Born Scopwick, enlisted Sleaford and resident Dorrington, Lincs. Commemorated Helles Memorial. Panel 331. There is also an individual memorial in the church.

Sacred to the memory of our dear and only son Charles Guy Clarke who was killed on the transport ‘Mercian’ by a shell from an enemy submarine in the Mediterranean on 3rd November, buried at sea 4th November 1915 near Oran, Algeria. Aged 19 years.

Private 27058. 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 10th November 1918. Born Brisley, Norfolk, enlisted Sleaford and resident Dorrington, Lincs. Commemorated Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension. III.F.2.

EASTWOOD

Thomas Hugh

Guardsman 1673. 4th Guards Machine Gun Regiment, formerly 11100 Coldstream Guards. Died of wounds 26th September 1918. Born Bexhill on Sea, Sussex, enlisted Lincoln and resident Lissington, Lincs. Commemorated Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille. V.B.16.

Private 15221. C Coy, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 16th June 1915, aged 21 years. Son of Emmanuel and Frances Melton of Bloxholm Cottages, Dorrington, Lincs. Born Dorrington, enlisted Sleaford and resident Dorrington, Lincs. Commemorated Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Panel 21.

Possibly Albert Sumner. Private 27306. 1st Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment. Died of wounds 23rd October 1916, aged 23 years. Son of George and S Ann Sumner of Thorpe Tilney, Lincs. Born Woodhall and enlisted Horncastle, Lincs. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 5D and 12B.

In 1901 Henry Williams born c 1887 is in Dorrington, Lincs and gives place of birth as Hornsby, Lincs (no such place). In 1916 Harry Williams died of wounds, also gives place of birth as Hornsby, Lincs. Possibly Harry Williams. Private 1929. 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 26th September 1916. Born Hornsby (?), enlisted Sleaford and resident Grimsby, Lincs. Commemorated Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe. IV.H.52.
