THORNTON CURTIS WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

There are two memorials in the church of St. Lawrence, Laurel Lane, Thornton Curtis. The first tablet is a First World War memorial listing 13 names. This memorial is in form of a nowy headed tablet set on a dark stone base with a coat of arms at the top and a shelf at the bottom and scrolls attached to each side with the letting in black in the centre. This memorial was unveiled on 1st December 1920. The second is a Second World War memorial that lists 5 names. This memorial is in form of a rectangular board with a moulded edge and black lettering and is to be found in the North aisle. A framed, glazed, Roll of Honour, also in the church, records the names of 71 men who 56 who served and returned and 15 who died in World War 1, the odd two are not listed here. A Roll of Honour also exists for those who served in World War 2 listing 31 names, 26 who served and returned and 5 who died.

CARLILE Charles William
Cannot locate details currently. In the 1911 census he was a Boarder, aged 17, Waggoner on Farm, born Feriby, resident Grayingham, Kirton Lindsey, Lincolnshire. The only birth registration to fit was for William Charles CARLILE in Glanford Brigg Registration District, Lincolnshire in July to September Quarter 1893.

Private 20641, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 23 March 1918. Born South Ferriby, Barton-On-Humber, Lincs, enlisted Lincoln, resident Belper, Derbyshire. Buried in ROYE NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, Somme, France. Plot II. Row D. Grave 6.
CANT Moses
Private 242081, 2/5th Battalion, leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action 6 December 1917. Born Haffen, Lincs, enlisted Barton-on-the-Humber. Buried in RUYAULCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot/Row/Section G. Grave 12.
CLAYTON Harold
Lance Corporal 1035, 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 8 April 1916. Born Wotton, Lincs, enlisted Grimsby, resident Thornton Curtis. Buried in BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, NORD, Nord, France. Plot II. Row D. Grave 205.
CLIFF Reginald Bertram Talbot
Captain, 1st (Lincolnshire Battery), Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 23 September 1915. Aged 33. Son of Joseph and Ada Cliff, of Scawby Grove, Brigg, Lincs; husband of M. Randolph Cliff, of "Kenilworth", Holden Rd., Woodside Park, London. Served in the South African Campaign. Buried in LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row A. Grave 17.

GODDARD Henry Thorpe
Engine Room Artificer 4th Class M/11218, H.M. Submarine K.4., Royal Navy. Died 31 January 1918 when his submarine was sunk in collision in North Sea. Aged 25. Son of Henry and Fanny S. Goddard, of Duncannon Cottage, Stoke Gabriel, Totnes, Devon and also The Laurels Thornton Curtis, Sleeby, Lincs. Native of Great Grimsby. Born 4 December 1892 in Grimsby. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 27.
HOWSON Charles William
Private 28777, East Yorkshire Regiment. Died of wounds 3 January 1918. Aged 32. Born and resident Hull, enlisted Beverley. Son of Charles and Mary Howson, of 6, Winship Buildings, Stainforth Place, Hessle Rd., Hull. Buried in RUYAULCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot/Row/Section H. Grave 6.

Sub-Lieutenant, H.M.S. Curacoa, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 2 October 1942 when his ship was sunk by an accidental collision with RMS Queen Mary. Son of William Henry and May Brocklesby, of Goxhill, Lincolnshire. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 66, Column 1.
COOK Thomas 'Tom' Charnley
