WINTERINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located at the junction of Silver Street and Low Burgage. It takes the form of a two stepped base surmounted by a plinth and Celctic Cross with the inscription on the front face of the plinth with an additional set of inscriptions on a stone set into the base of the cross/ There is is a sword carved in releief on the front face of the cross. There are 11 names for World War 1 and 4 for World War 2. See also the Winteringham War memorial site.

This memorial was erected by public subscription in honoured memory of the undermentioned men from this parish who fell in the Great War A.D 1914 – 1919.

BROWN

Frank

Private 9928. 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 31st May 1917. Born Winterton, enlisted Crosby and resident West Halton, Lincs. Commemorated BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (Nord). III.B.202.

BURKILL

George

Able Seaman 207490. HMS Penelope, Royal Navy. Died in an accident aboard the ship 4th December 1915, aged 28 years. Son of (the late) Henry and Anna Burkill of High Burgage, Winteringham, Lincs. Commemorated CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL. 9.

Reginald John

Private 36893. 6th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, formerly 8/16700 Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 5th October 1916, aged 23 years. Son of John and Mary Dodds of 23 Low Street, Winterton, Lincs. Born Conesby, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Winteringham, Lincs. Commemorated BRAY VALE BRITISH CEMETERY, Bray-Sur-Somme. IV.C.13.

Private 40213. 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 31st July 1917, aged 30 years. Son of Amos and Dinah Ellen Earl. Enlisted Lincoln and resident Winteringham, Lincs. Commemorated YPRES (Menin Gate) MEMORIAL. Panel 21.

FIELD

Elias William

Sergeant 525. 1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry. Died at sea 22nd December 1915, aged 53 years. Husband of Mary Ellen Field of Ferry Boat Inn, Winteringham, Lincs. Born Scunthorpe, enlisted Grimsby, Lincs and resident Doncaster, Yorks. He was on the Mercian, when he was wounded when attacked by gunfire (not torpedo) from a German submarine, and died six weeks later in hospital. Commemorated LE PETIT LAC CEMETERY. E.F.35.

Private 41117. 11th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, formerly 25357 North Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 17th August 1917, aged 34 years. Son of John and Mary Ellen Green of Silver Street, Winteringham, Lincs and brother of Joseph Herbert Green. Born Ashby, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Winteringham, Lincs. Commemorated TYNE COT MEMORIAL. Panel 120 to 124 and 162 to 162A and 163A.

Private 21313. 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26th March 1918, aged 28 years. Son of John and Mary Ellen Green of Silver Street, Winteringham, Lincs and brother of Albert Green. Born Winteringham, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Winteringham, Lincs. Commemorated POZIERES MEMORIAL. Panel 23 and 24.

Private 62802. 7th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 11th October 1918, aged 18 years. Son of Mr G.H and Mrs S.J Robinson of Towler Place, West End, Winteringham, Lincs. Born Winteringham and enlisted Scunthorpe, Lincs. Commemorated ST AUBERT BRITISH CEMETERY. IV.D.21.

Private 4858296. 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. Died 25th May 1941, aged 21 years. Son of Mr and Mrs Albert Burkill of Winteringham, Lincs. Commemorated ATHENS MEMORIAL. Face 7.

COX

Frederick J

Gunner 4808358, 6/3 Maritime Regiment. Died 8th June 1942. Aged 32. Believed to be one of four British gunners on the Norwegian vessel "South Africa", which was torpedoed by a German submarine, and killed in the blast as the torpedo hit the ship, along with 5 others. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 67, Column 1.

Possibly Leading Seaman P/JX264867. HMS Aeolus, Royal Navy. Died 8th September 1944, aged 32 years. Son of Percival and Alice Hall, husband of Annie Evelyn Hall of Barnetby, Lincs. Commemorated CHICHESTER CEMETERY. Square 159.CofE Plot. Grave 24.

Possibly Private 5343379. 2nd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Died 8th July 1944, aged 24 years. Son of William and Elizabeth Mary Hunsley, husband of Joan Dorothy Hunsley of Addiscombe, Croyden, Surrey. Commemorated LA DELIVRANDE WAR CEMETERY, Douvres. X.H.5.
