The Winterton on Sea memorials are to be found at Holy Trinity and All Saints Church, Black Street, Winterton-on-Sea. The World War 1 memorial is external to the church, in the grounds, and takes the form of a plain, rough hewn, Celtic cross on a tapering plinth with a two stepped base; there are 18 names listed. The World War 2 memorial takes the form of a reconstructed organ with dedicatory tablet; there are 26 names listed.

Grandson of George and Eliza Brown. Husband of Betsy Brown (nee Hodds) of King Street, Winterton, Norfolk. Born c1889 East Somerton, Norfolk (as 1891 census, born Winterton on other records). Commemorated Winterton (All Saints) Churchyard.

Deck Hand 3152DA, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Drifter ‘Norford Suffling’. Died of illness 14th November 1915. Son of James and Ellen M Chapman of Colls Lane, West Somerton, Norfolk (as 1911). Husband of Dorothy M Chapman (nee Haylett) of Nurses Home, Howards Road, Plaistow, LND. Born 21st June 1893 Runham, Norfolk. Commemorated Winterton (All Saints) Churchyard.

Charles William Chettleburgh. Private 16877. 7th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 13th October 1915. Son of Charles and Mary Chettleburgh of Hopton, Norfolk (as 1911). Born 1895 Crostwick (as SDGW, born Postwick as census) and enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Commemorated Loos Memorial. Panel 30 and 31.
DYBLE Henry
Henry Stephen Dyble. Engineman 523ES, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Drifter ‘Ocean Fisher’ (sunk by mine). Died 16th June 1918. Son of George Thomas and Evaline Amelia Dyble. Husband of Alice E Dyble (nee King) of The Lane, Winterton, Norfolk. Born 1891 Caister, Norfolk. Commemorated Chatham Naval Memorial. 31.
GISLAM Stanley
Stanley Gisslam on 1898 birth record, Stanley William Gislam on other records. Deck Hand 3623DA, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Drifter ‘Select’ (sunk by collision, Gislam only casualty). Killed in action 16th April 1918. Son of William and Susannah Gislam of Winterton, Norfolk. Commemorated Chatham Naval Memorial. 30.

GREEN Arthur Percival
Arthur Percival Green. Lieutenant. D Company, 7th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died ‘near Albert’ 6th July 1916. Son of Revd William Arthur and Alice Mary Green of Winterton Rectory, Norfolk. Born c 1894 Winterton, Norfolk. Commemorated Albert Communal Cemetery Extension. I.I.22.

John Frederick King. Engineman 3703ES, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Drifter ‘Girl Eva’ (sunk by mine). Killed in action 2nd October 1916. Son of John and Sabina King of King Street, Winterton, Norfolk (as 1911). Husband of Sarah Elizabeth King (nee Larner) of 2 May Cottages, Winterton, Norfolk. Born 6th March 1877 Winterton, Norfolk. William Robert King. Engineman 4251TS, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Drifter ‘Waveney II’ (caught fire and sank when shelled by German destroyers). Died 26th October 1916. Son of William and Eliza King of Winterton, Norfolk [CWGC has mistaken entry ‘of Winterton, Lincolnshire’]. Husband of Ellen E King (nee Parker) of High Road, Repps, Norfolk. Born 8th December 1889 Winterton, Norfolk. Commemorated Chatham Naval Memorial.19.
LARNER George Edward
Possibly George Edward Larner, born 6th February 1892 Winterton, the son of Thirza Elizabeth Larner (later wife of Edward John Powles of ‘Clink’, Winterton as 1911). With mother 1901, untraced 1911. Unable to identify as casualty (either surname) and no further information.
POPAY Bertie
Private 24091. 7th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 9th April 1917. Son of James Daniel and Margaret Sophia Popay of Beach Road, Winterton, Norfolk. Born 1890 Winterton and enlisted Great Yarmouth (attested 10th December 1915, mobilized 11th February 1916), Norfolk. Commemorated Arras Memorial. Bay 3.
POWLES Lewis Charles
Able Seaman London Z/1126, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Hood Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Died as ‘Prisoner of War’ 5th September 1917. Son of Robert Henry and Elizabeth Powles. Husband of Laura May Powles (nee Grey as marriage record, Gray on other records) of Winterton, Norfolk. Born 7th January 1887 Winterton, Norfolk and enlisted 23rd September 1914. POWLES Tom Claude
Second Hand 1049DA, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Trawler ‘William Beatty’ (some naval records have of HMS ‘Hannibal’ a ‘Pre Dreadnought Battleship’ acting as Depot Ship at Alexandria, Egypt. Appears to be trawlers ‘Mother Ship’). Died of septicaemia 2nd November 1918. Son of Walter and Isabella Powles of Beach Road, Winterton, Norfolk. Born 23rd April 1897Winterton, Norfolk. Commemorated Port Said War Memorial Cemetery. L.16.

Possibly Eric Boulby. Gunner 977748. 55 Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died 13th May 1945. Son of George F and Meggie Boulby (nee McCormack). Husband of Amy J Boulby (nee Smith). Born 1920 Darlington and resident Darlington, DUR (as Army Roll of Honour). Commemorated Aycliffe (St Andrew) Churchyard.

Note: no proven connection with Winterton found. Birth of Amy J Smith in Yarmouth District and marriage in Acle District only Norfolk references found.

Katherine Jane Brown (nee Larner). Civilian. Died 7th May 1943. Widow of Henry Robert Brown. Died at Back Road, Winterton, Norfolk. Born 1890. Reporting Authority: Blofield and Flegg Rural District.

Note: appears to be bomb/machine gun attack by FW190 aircraft on Caistor, Hemsby and Winterton.
