World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

There are two Roll of Honours of Honour displayed in St. Michael and All Angels Church, Church Lane, Newton Purcell, on the south wall. The first is a wall mounted, framed Roll of Honour for World War 1 listing 21 men who served and returned and 3 that died. The seond is a wall mounted, framed and glazed, hand painted Roll of Honour with names of the Fallen marked alongside by a cross. At the bottom of the Roll is a painted laurel wreath and flag upon a grave with a wooden cross. There are 11 names of those who served and returned and one who died.

Private 14598, 18th (Queen Mary's Own Royal) Hussars. Killed in action 20 November 1917. Aged 30. Born and resident Buckingham, enlisted London. Son of Mary Holton, of The Post Office, Newton Purcell, Buckingham, and the late Noah Holton. In the 1891 census he was aged 3, born Oxfordshire, a scholar, son of Noah and Mary Holton, resident Shop, Newton Purcell, Bicester, Oxfordshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 13, born Newton Purcell, son Mary Holton (a widow), resident Newton Morrell, Newton Purcell, Bicester, Oxfordshire. No known grave. Commemorated on CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL, Nord, France. Panel 1.

Lance Corporal (Transport Corporal) 9037, 1st Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died on service in Mesopotamia 3 September 1916. Born and resident Newton Purrall, Oxon (sic - s/b Newton Purcell), enlisted Oxford. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (D.C.M.). In the 1891 census he was aged 2, born newton Purcell, son of Edward and Harriett, resident Newton Purcell, Bicester, Oxfordshire. Buried in BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY, Iraq. Plot XXI. Row D. Grave 23.

Private 8592, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. Reported missing, presumed killed in action, 29 October 1914. Aged 20. Son of Edward and Harriet Horwood, of 21, Newton Purcell, Buckingham. Attested 10 April 1913 at Caterham, aged 19 years 1 month, unmarried, a Builder's Labourer, born Newton Purcell. Served at home 10 April 1913 to 12 August 1914, in France 13 August 1914 until his death 29 October 1914. Height 5 feet 8½ inches, weight 128lbs, chest 35½ inches, sallow complexion, grey eyes, fair hair, religious denomination Church of England. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 11.

Gunner 1547428, 78 Battery, 35 Light A.A. Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died as a Japanese Prisoner of War 24 July 1945. Aged 41. Son of William and Thirza Gough, of Newton Purcell, Oxfordshire. Captured on 9 March 1942. On the 14 September 1942 he was transported with 725 other PoW's on the Nishi Maru to Singapore arriving 18 September 1942; then on 9 October 1942 he was transported with another 672 PoW's from Singapore on an unknown ship to Kuching, Borneo. Buried in LABUAN WAR CEMETERY, Malasia. Plot N. Row B. Grave 16.
