HM TROOPSHIP REWA

Researched & Copyright © Martin Edwards 2008

HM Troopship Rewa was built by William Denny for the British India Steam Navigation Company, and launched in 1905, completed 1906. She was requisitioned as a troopship in World War 1 and later converted to a hospital ship. She was sunk by German submarine, U-55, in the Bristol Channel, 4th January 1918.

HMHS Rewa, having sailed from Malta bound for Cardiff. was carrying 279 cot and walking wounded cases from Greece. She was in the Bristol Channel, when on the 4th of January 1918, Wilhelm Werner in his U-55, lined her up, and sank her with his torpedoes. Two crewmen died, and the ship was very lucky to get away with such light casualties.

The wreck of Rewa was discovered by divers in September of 2003, lying upright in about 60 metres of water some 33 miles from Newquay off the Northern coast of Cornwall.
