SAMPFORD ARUNDEL WAR MEMORIAL

The Sampford Arundel memorial can be found in the grounds of Holy Cross Church, Sampford Arundel. It takes the form of a cross with a tapering shaft, mounted on a three-stepped base; the inscriptions are in raised lettering mon one side of the steps. There are 65 names for World War 1 (59 are names of those who served, 6 names for those who fell) and 1 for world War 2.

Neville Reay

Lieutenant Colonel, Devon and Cornwall Light Infantry. Killed in action in Polygon Wood, Flanders on the 4th October 1917, aged 28 years, whilst commanding the 9th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Only son of Major and Mrs R Holford Daniell of Broadleigh. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) and the Military Cross (M.C.).

There is a commemorative plaque within the church for this man which also lists details of the other 5 who died.

Captain and Adjutant, 17th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula before Achi Baba on the 2nd May 1915. Aged 27. (The brass plaque and window in the South Aisle contain the details)

Second Lieutenant, 6th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment. Killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula under Chunuk Bair on the 16th August 1915. Aged 22. (The brass plaque and window in the South Aisle contain the details)

Flight Lieutenant, Royal Navy. Killed whist flying on duty at Chingford, Essex on 11th May 1917. Aged 24. Buried 18th May 1917 at the East end of Holy Cross Churchyard, Sampford Arundel. (The brass plaque and window in the South Aisle contain the details)

Captain Hamshire Regiment and Royal flying Corps. Killed in action 22nd June 1916. (The small brass plaque in the South Aisle was formerly on the Cross in Belgium)
