Officer's Steward 3rd Class L/5179, H.M.S. "Hampshire," Royal Navy. Killed when his ship sank after hitting a mine just off Marwick Head, Orkney, 5 June 1916. Aged 19. Born 20 November 1895 in Yeovil, Somerset. Son of John and Annie Parsons, of 19, Queen St., Huish, Yeovil. General Labourer prior to enlistment. Height 5 feet 5½ inches, chest 35½ inches, brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born Yeovil, Somerset, a Bricklayer's Labourer, son of John James Read and helena Ann Parsons, resident 2 Charlotte Place, Sherborne Road, Yeovil, Somerset. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 17.

PAYNE Wilfred S G

Guardsman 24017, 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Killed in action 25 September 1916. Born and enlisted Yeovil, Somerset. Buried in GUARDS' CEMETERY, LESBOEUFS, Somme, France. Special memorial 73.

Note: There are now 3,137 casualties of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. 1,644 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to 83 soldiers known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials record the names of five casualties buried in Ginchy A.D.S. Cemetery, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire, and three officers of the 2nd Bn. Coldstream Guards, killed in action on 26 September 1916 and known to have been buried together by the roadside near Lesboefs, whose grave could not later be located.

Son of the late Eli and Janet Pike; husband of Bessie Pike, of 35, Great Western Terrace, Yeovil. No known grave. Commemorated on LA FERTE-SOUS-JOUARRE MEMORIAL, Seine-et-Marne, France.

Extract from Western Chronicle - Friday 2 October 1914, page 4:

LOCAL MEN KILLED AND WOUNDED.

Private A, Pike, Yeovil. Private Richard Abednigo ("Ben") Pike, a reservist of the Dorset Regiment, was on Wednesday, September 23rd, officially stated, by the War Office to have been killed. Deceased, who lived at 35, Great Wester-terrace, Yeovil, leaves a widow and three young children, the eldest being only six. About a week ago his wife received notification that the deceased was wounded and missing, and on the morning of September 23rd the fateful news that he had died from wounds sustained at Wurns (sic), near Mons, France.

We have received the following communication signed “A Friend, from West Down South, Salisbury Plain, August 25: “Much sympathy is felt tor Pte. W. Pike and his brother on Salisbury Plain who received the sad news of the death of their brother, who was killed in the Battle of Mons.’’

In the 1911 census he was aged 10, born Yeovil, Somerset, at school, son of Arthur george and Ellen Poole, resident 21 Orchard Street, Yeovil, Somerset. Attested 20 April 1918, aged 17, religious denomination Baptist, height 5 feet 11 inches, chest 33¾ inches, black hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, served in Egypt 29 August 1918 to 25 June 1919. Gunner 860608, "C" Battery, 217th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died on service in India 6 July 1918. Aged 32. Born St. John's, Yeovil, Somerset, enlisted Bridport. Son of W. H. Powney and Annie L. Powney, of Yeovil, Somerset. No known grave. Commemorated on KARACHI 1914-1918 WAR MEMORIAL, Pakistan.

Baptised 17 October 1897 in Preston Plucknett, Somerset, son of Charles and Preston. . Prior to enlistment he was a Dairyman. Religious denomination Church of England. Enlisted 29 December 1912 in Exeter, aghed 18 years 3 months 12 days. Discharged as invalided 12 April 1917. Date of death and place of burial unknown but the latter is probably in Yeovil.
