On 9th September 1917, HM Submarine G9 was on patrol in the North Sea searching for a German submarine believed to be in the area. While on the surface, G9 fired a torpedo at what was believed to be a submarine, but was in fact, a British destroyer HMS Paisley. The torpedo missed, but G9 was rammed and sunk by the destroyer.

Leading Stoker 308083, Royal Navy. HMS Hogue. Died 22/09/1914. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. HMS Hogue, an old 1st Class armoured cruiser, was part of Cruiser Force C, in the area of the North Sea known as the Broad Fourteens (HMS Eurylus, HMS Aboukir and HMS Cressy were the other three cruisers). HMS Eurylus had technical problems and returned to port. Early on September 22nd 1914 the German submarine U9 under the command of Commander Otto Weddigen sighted the Cressy, Aboukir and Hogue steaming NNE at 10 knots without zigzagging. Although the patrols were supposed to maintain 12-13 knots and zigzag the old cruisers were unable to maintain that speed and the zigzagging order was widely ignored as there had been no submarines sighted in the area during the war. HMS Aboukir was hit by a torpedo first and rolled over within half an hour of the attack. HMS Hogue was picking up survivors when she was hit by two torpedoes, sinking within 10 minutes. HMS Cressy had stopped to pick up survivors, but got underway, before she was hit by a torpedo and damaged. Shortly afterwards, a second torpedo hit her and she sank within 15 minutes. 837 men were rescued but 1459 men were killed in total

Lieutenant, Royal Navy. HMS Lynx. Died 09/08/1915. Age 23. Son of Bruce and Helen Thornbury. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. At 0600 on 9th August 1915, the destroyer HMS Lynx was on patrol on the Moray Firth, when she struck a mine and exploded, with the loss of all but 24 of her crew.

Arnold Robert

Engine Room Artificer 3rd Class M/10906, Royal Navy. HM Submarine D3. Died 15/03/1918. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. On 7th March 1918, HM Submarine D3 left Gosport for an anti-submarine patrol in the English Channel. On 12th March, the French airship AT-0, flying near Fechamp spotted a submarine on the surface and drew closer for recognition purposes. It is believed that D3 fired four identification rockets, which the French mistook for aggressive gunfire and AT-0 dropped four bombs onto the submarine, resulting in her sinking. The airship crew attempted to rescue the crew, but this proved impossible and other help was sought. By the time this arrived, all of D3’s crew had drowned

Deck Hand 10410DA, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Trawler John High. Died 07/08/1916. Age 17. Son of William Wood of 61 King Street, Aldeburgh. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. During 1916 the German Navy laid mines in the Barents and White Seas to make it unsafe for ammunition, stores and fuel to be fed into Russia via Archangel and Murmansk. British mine sweepers arrived in Murmansk to assist with the clearing of these mines, but in heavy seas, one of these vessels. HM Trawler John High. hit a mine and exploded with the loss of all hands in August 1916.

Able Seaman C/J39419, Royal Navy. HMS Avenger. Died 15/11/1942. Age 42. Son of William and Anne Block. husband of Alice Maud Block of Shieldhill, Stirlingshire. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. HMS Avenger was an Escort Carrier. After taking part in the Operation Torch landings of North Africa in November 1942, she departed Gibraltar with convoy MFK 1(Y) on 14 November, heading home to the Clyde in the UK. At 0305 on 15 November, approximately 45 nautical miles South of Cap Santa Maria, Portugal, Avenger was torpedoed by the German U-Boat U-155, along with two other escorting merchant ships. Avenger was hit on the port side amidships, which in turn ignited her bomb room, blowing out the centre section of the ship. Her bow and stern sections rose in the air and sunk within 2 minutes, leaving only 12 survivors

Leading Stoker C/KX 84368, Royal Navy. HM Submarine Usk. Died 03/05/1941. Age 29. Son of Robert Carl and Sarah Cable of Aldeburgh. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. On 19th April 1941 HMS Usk sailed from Malta for a patrol off the north-west coast of Sicily. Anti-submarine activity was intense and Usk was accordingly ordered to alter her position until this activity had passed. What happened to Usk during her change of position has never been established, but it is almost certain that she was mined in the vicinity of Cape Bon, Tunisia, some time after 25th April

In May 1941, HMS Warspite took part in the Battle of Crete. During the battle she sustained damage by a direct heavy bomb hit. Signalman Collier was one of the casualties of this attack

Sub-Lieutenant (A), Royal Navy. HMS Sparrowhawk. Died 13/04/1940. Age 20. Son of Brevet Colonel G D Franklin (Retd.) and Mrs Franklin of Aldeburgh. Commemorated on the Lee-on-Solent Memorial. HMS Sparrowhawk was the Royal Naval Air Station near Kirkwall. At the time of Sub Lt Franklin’s death, the two Fleet Air Arm squadrons. 800 and 803. were flying Blackburn Skua aircraft. Three days prior to his death, the two squadrons attacked and destroyed the German cruiser Konigsberg in a dramatic raid on Bergen harbour in Norway. The cause of Sub Lt Franklin’s death is unknown. he did not take part in the raid

Buried at Aldeburgh (SS Peter and Paul) Churchyard. HMS Duchess of Rothesay was a paddle-steamer requisitioned by the Admiralty to resume her WW1 role as a minesweeper. After attending the Dunkirk evacuation, she operated in the ports of Dover, Portsmouth and Harwich

Fighter-bomber missions were flown against enemy shipping and coastal targets until December 1943, when it was withdrawn for army co-operation training in preparation for re-equipment with Typhoons

F/O Reade’s death is recorded at North Walsham, Norfolk. 68 Squadron reformed at Catterick on 7 January 1941 as a night-fighter Squadron equipped with Blenheims and became operational on 7 April before moving to High Ercall for the defence of the Midlands. In May 1941, 68 converted to Beaufighters and in March 1942 they moved to East Anglia where they spent two years at Coltishall
