Second Lieutenant, 16th Battalion, London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles), attached 27 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Died 20/05/1916. Age 21. Son of Mr and Mrs Duncan F Basden of 26 Thurlow Road, Hampstead, London. Buried at Y Farm Military Cemetery, Bois-Grenier. Formed at Hounslow on 5 November 1915 from a nucleus provided by No. 24 Squadron, No.27 became the first squadron to be fully equipped with the Martinsyde G100 'Elephant'. Although intended as a fighter, the aircraft found itself more suited to reconnaissance and bombing missions after moving to France in March 1916. It wasn't until the autumn of 1917 that DH4 light bombers replaced the G100s, and these remained with the Squadron for the remainder of the war.

Stanley Walter

Believed to be Able Seaman J/19244, Royal Navy, HM Submarine E4. Died 28/01/1918. Age 21. Son of Walter and Elizabeth Emeney of Doctors Lane, Laxfield. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

Whilst carrying out anti submarine exercises in the North Sea, HMS E41 acting as a target, had begun a surface passage of 12 knots when HMS E4’s periscope appeared 50 yards off her starboard bow, on a collision course. E41 stopped her engines but not before E4 collided forward of the bridge. E41 began to take in water through the forward battery compartment and began to sink by the bow. In less than two minutes the conning tower was under the water. HMS Firdrake, who had been monitoring the exercise, took less than two minutes to reach the scene of the collision to pick up survivors. There were no survivors from E4. Both submarines were eventually located, salvaged and returned to service. Recorded on the Roll of Honour as Samuel EMENY
