LITTLEHAMPTON,
JOHN EEDE BUTT & SONS WAR
MEMORIAL
World
War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Brian White 2013
There
is a very unusual roll of honour, a wooden board listing employees of
John Eede Butt & Sons in Littlehampton and Brighton. Travis Arnold,
later Travis Perkins, Pier Road, Littlehampton, later took over the
site. The wooden roll of honour dedicated to the memory of men employed
by timber merchant and importer John Eede Butt and Sons at yards in
Littlehampton and Brighton takes the form of a wooden plaque, listing
the names of 21 who served and returned or died fighting in the war,
and has been fixed to the wall of the Littlehampton’s Look and
Sea Centre, at Fisherman’s Quay, on the site of the old Butts’
yard. It was made by the artist Eric Gill, whose many other commissions
included designing the Stations of the Cross in Westminster Abbey. The
names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of reading
and research. It was unveiled at its new site by Town mayor Jill Long,
and the vicar of St Mary’s Church, Fr Roger Caswell, led the brief
service of dedication, which was also attended by trustees of Look and
Sea, and Roy Coltrup and Brian White, who saved the memorial from ending
up on a rubbish tip in the 1970's. Details in the Littlehampton
Gazette 25 November 1914.
