Patcham was a South Downs village that has now been engulfed by Brighton. The Patcham Parish Church War Memorial for the 1914-1918 war is in the form of a Memorial Cross in the Churchyard of All Saints Parish Church. There are 26 Surnames for World War 1 with some Christian Names. There are two burials in the Churchyard one not included on the Memorial.

Second Lieutenant, 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Wounded in France and died at home of influenza 5th November 1918. Aged 29. Fourth son of Mr and Mrs H. R. Blackburn of "The Woodlands Surrenden Road, Brighton. Husband of Mrs R. Blackburn of Brocton Gate Farm, Staffordshire. Educated at Radley and Oxford University. Included on Brighton War Memorial and St Peters Memorial Book. (Brighton Parish Church) Buried in Norwood Cemetery, South London.

Private TF/320465, 16th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 74th Division. Died at home 29th September 1918. Aged 24. Son of Edwin and Jane Bristow of Patcham. Born in Patcham and enlisted in Brighton. Buried in All Saints Churchyard, Patcham.

Petty Officer 1st Class 168364, H.M.S. "Caroline, Royal Navy Died at home 19th November 1917. Aged 41. Husband of Mrs Emily Chatfield of 48, Tillstone Street, Brighton. Brighton War Memorial. Buried in Brighton (Bear Road) Borough Cemetery.

Probably: William Harry CHATFIELD, Private 458331, Labour Corps. Formerly TF/267153 Royal Sussex Regiment. Died of sickness after the war 14th February 1919. Aged 20. Son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Chatfield of 9, The High Street, Rottingdean. Included on Rottingdean War Memorial. Buried in St Margaret’s Churchyard Rottingdean.

Warrant Officer 2nd Class (Battery Quartermaster Sergeant) 33285, "V Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. Killed in action in Mesopotamia 24th February 1917. Aged 35. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Chatfield of Patcham. Husband of Mrs Clara Mary Chatfield of 231 Council Houses, Roffey. Born in Patcham and enlisted in Brighton. Commemorated on The Basra Memorial Iraq. MR.38

Private SD/3545, 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division. Died of wounds in captivity in Germany 3rd May 1918. Aged 21. Son of Frederick and Ruth Coppard of 5, Drove Cottages, Patcham. Born in Patcham and enlisted in Hove. Buried in Berlin (West) Cemetery.

Son of Frederick and Ruth Coppard of 5, Drove Cottages, Patcham. Husband of Mrs Alice Coppard of 33, Cromwell Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Born in Brighton and enlisted in Gillingham. Commemorated on The Helles Memorial Gallipoli MR.4.

Private G/17813, 11th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 39th Division. Killed in action 29th April 1918. Aged 25. Son of William and Hepzibah Edwards of 5, Mile End Cottages, Patcham. Born in Ditchling and enlisted in Hove. Commemorated on The Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium MR.30

Private 26790, 2nd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment. 30th Division. Killed in action during the March Retreat 21st March 1918. Born Dorset and enlisted in Brighton Next of kin, Patcham. Formerly with the Royal Sussex. Commemorated on The Pozieres Memorial MR.27

Son of Albert Henry and Emma Elizabeth Flint of 1, Mile End Cottages, Patcham. Born in Reigate and enlisted in Brighton. Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. F. 40

Possibly: George Gladman, Private 681431, 75th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment). Killed in action 30th September 1918. Aged 29. Born 26th March 1889 in Sussex. Living at 165, Dovercourt Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his wife Kate when he enlisted. Son of William Gladman, of Shoreham, Sussex, England; husband of Kate Buxton, (formerly Gladman), of 2, Hugo Avenue, Toronto, Canada. Munition worker by trade. Enlisted and passed fit 13th March 1916, aged 26 years 11 months in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Height 5 feet 5¾ inches, girth 36½ inches, complexion medium, eyes grey, hair light brown, mole on left cheek. Religion Church of England. Buried in Cantimore Canadian Cemetery, Sailly. Lance Corporal 7932, 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment attached to The Supply and Transport Corps, Mesopotamia. Died 22nd December 1915. Aged 24. Son of Major Howard Vyse Welch and Minnie Eugene Helen Welch of Southdown House, Patcham. Born in Patcham and enlisted in Winchester. Commemorated on The Basra Memorial, Iraq. MR. 38.
