The memorial is in the form of a wooden tablet in the Church of St.Mary & St.Peter opposite the main door. The 17 names listed on this tbalet are repeated on the Stone Memorial Cross in the Churchyard.

Henry Stephen

Lance Corporal G/16350, 9th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division. Killed in action during the March Retreat 22nd March 1918. Aged 24. Son of Amos & Frances Batehup of Knight Cottage, Pett. Husband of Mrs Nellie Rosabel Batehup of 16, Grove Street, Hastings. Born in Ewhurst and enlisted in Hastings. Included on Ore and Hastings War Memorials. Commemorated on The Pozieres Memorial MR.27

Henry [Charles]

Private G/1716, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 1st Division. Killed in action near Vermelles 26th August 1915. Aged 26. Son of Luke & Ellen Beeching of Pett Road, Fairlight. Born in Guestling and enlisted in Hastings. Buried in Vermelles British Cemetery F. 423

BEECHING

John

Able Seaman 186613C, H.M.S. "Aboukir", Royal Navy. Lost when the Armoured Cruiser was torpedoed off the Dutch Coast 22nd September 1914. Aged 36. Son of Mary & William Beeching of Jessamine Cottage, Pett. Commemorated on The Chatham, Naval Memorial MR.1

Note: H.M.S. Aboukir was a Cressy Class cruiser of the Royal Navy. Displacement of 12,000 tons. Armament: two 9.2 ins guns (bow & stern), twelve 6 ins quick-firers in a central battery and many more small quick-firers and machine guns. Speed: 21 knots. Launched 16th May 1900. HMS Aboukir, along with HMS Cressy and HMS Hogue, were all torpedoed by the German U-boat U9 on 22nd September 1914.

Leading Seaman 138931PO, H.M.S. "India" (from P&O), Royal Navy. Lost when the Armed Merchant Cruiser was torpedoed off Norway 8th August 1915 by U22. Son of John & Caroline Elizabeth Brooman of Pett. Husband of Mrs Lily Brooman (remarried) of Southsea. Born Seven Oaks, Hastings Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial MR.3.

Frederick James

Leading Seaman 179718C, H.M. Armed Trawler "Briton", Royal Navy. Lost at sea 21st July 1915. Son of Mr & Mrs C. Cooke of Pett. Commemorated on The Chatham Naval Memorial MR.1

George Frederick

Petty Officer 17871/PO, H.M.S. "Queen Mary", Royal Navy. Lost when the Battlecruiser blew up during the Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, MR. 3

Driver 141035, 68th Field Company, The Royal Engineers. 11th Division. Died in base hospital in Boulogne, France 15th January 1918. Aged 32. Grandson of Mr Jesse Cox of Pett Labe, Pett Level Born in Fairlight and enlisted in Hastings. Buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery F. 102

Thomas Frank Preston Thwaites

[Listed as P T F T DENNETT on memorial] Second Lieutenant, No 52 Artillery Observation Squadron (R.E.8's), Royal Flying Corps. Died of wounds 5th August 1917. Aged 22. Son of Frank H. & Mary Isabella Thwaites Dennett of "The Cedars Pett. Born in Croydon. Formerly with the Royal West Surreys. Buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium. B.24

Private 20329, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Munster Fusiliers. 50th Division. Killed in action 4th October 1918. Aged 33. Son of James Matthew & Mary Fellows of "The Lodge Pett. Born and enlisted in Hastings. Formerly with the Dorset Regiment. Buried in Bellicourt British Cemetery F. 375

FLEET

Arthur James

Private L/9677, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 1st Division. Killed in action near Zillebeke, Belgium 7th November 1914. Aged 21. Nephew of Mrs L. K. Harrison of 32, Freemasons Road, Croydon. Born in Aldershot and enlisted in Chichester. Regular Soldier. He was step-brother to Sydney Edward FLEET (see below). His mother, Mary Jane, died when he was born and his Father, Arthur, moved from Surrey to Winchelsea, East Sussex, remarried to Elizabeth Martha (see below) and the family, including Arthur James, moved to Pett, East Sussex. Although not of Pett, Arthur James is commemorated on the Memorial Cross because of his family's connection with Pett. Commemorated on The Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium MR.29

Private 43996, The Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died at home after the war 30th April 1920. Aged 23. Son of Arthur & Elizabeth Martha Fleet. Husband of Mrs Ethel Louisa Fleet of Myrtle Cottage, Pett. Step-borther to Arthur James Fleet (above). Born in Winchelsea. Buried in St. Peter & St. Mary Churchyard, Pett.

Able Seaman R/6247, "Drake" Battalion, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. 63rd Royal Naval Division. Killed in action 27th September 1918. Home town Guestling. Buried in Moeuvres British Cemetery. F. 484

Son of George Richard & Eleanor Griffen of 'Danegate' Eridge Green. Enlisted in Hastings. Included on Eridge Green Church War Memorial Commemorated on The Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium MR.30
