This memorial is in the old churchyard of St Andrew's Church and takes the form of a cross mounted on an octagonal plinth standing on a three-stepped base. The plinth has the inscriptions on three sides and a wreath, in relief, at the front. There are 37 names for World War 1 and none for World War 2.

Able Seaman, Clyde Z/5322 Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Killed or died as a direct result of enemy action on 28th April 1917. Son of Mr & Mrs Archer, 2 Mitchell St, Cambridge. Father was originally listed as next of kin, Robert Archer, of 1 Mitchell Street, Coatbridge, Lanark. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 1.
AVES Edward Charles
Company Sergeant Major 21926, 25th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Killed in action 10th April 1918. Born St Ndrews, Cambridge, enlisted Cambridge. Formerly 1206, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Brother-in-law to G W Collins who also fell. No known grave. Commemorated on PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL, Hainaut, Belgium. Panel 11.

Known as 'Teddy'. Christened at St. Matthews Church, 2nd October 1881, parents Edward Aves and Mary Anne Beales, they were living, at his birth, at 8 Gwydir Street, Cambridge. He served in the Cambridgeshire Regiment - previously the Volunteer Force (3rd (Cambs) Volunteer Btn, Suffolk Regiment) which on 1st April 1908 became the Territorial Army. He was serving in A company, 1st Cambridgeshire, in 1908. No 40. He was one of those who sounded the Last Post at Midnight on 31st March 1908 - Cambridge Evening News article, Friday, 27th May 1983. At this time he was a Corporal. Sergeant-Drummer, awarded Territorial Force Efficiency Medal 30thg October 1909. Terminated his service 5th April 1911. Re-enlisted in "A" company, in 1911 as No 1206. Married, living 21a Emery St, Cambridge. Employed as a compositor at the University Press. Lance-Sergeant in 1913-1914. Volunteered for Imperial Service; he was mobilised with the Cambridgeshire Regiment on 4th August 1914 and afterwards transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. Prior to this he was Company Quartermaster-Sergeant and Company Sergeant-Major in the 1/1st Battalion. Cambridgeshire Regiment. He landed in France in February 1915 and went to front with 1/1st Cambridgeshire Regiment on 14th February 1915, in B company, 8 platoon, 15 section, as Sergeant; he served overseas continuously for more than three years. He was reported missing on 10th April 1918 and later reported killed on that date. At the time of his death he was Company Sergeant-Major.

He is listed on six War Memorials, namely St. George's Chapel, Ely Cathedral, the list in the entrance to the Guildhall, Market Square, Cambridge, on Panel 11 of the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, the War Memorial in the grounds of St. Andrew The Great Church, Cambridge, on the War Memorial at the University Press, Cambridge and on the University Press Memorial in St. Boltoph's Church, Cambridge

BENNETT Harry James

Lieutenant 59056, 21st Battalion, Canadian Infantry and Lieutenant, 49th Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 24 September 1918. Aged 28. Son of Mrs. Mary Anne Bennett, of 8, Guest Rd., Cambridge. Originally buried at Dechy Communal Cemetery (German extn.) grave no. 315. Buried in CABARET-ROUGE BRITISH CEMETERY, SOUCHEZ, P_as de Calais, France. Plot XIV. Row F, Grave 6.

His attestation papers (dated 6th November 1914 at Kingston, Ontario) give his details as follows: Born 15th April 1891, Cambridge; next of kin Clara Kinnear (listed as Sarah on papers), 15, Victoria St., Cambridge, son of Harry Bennett & Mary Ann Bennett, of 8 Guest Road,Cambridge; trade mechanic, employed at McLaughlin Buick Auto Factory, Oshawa, Ontario 1911-13; then garage proprietor at Pembroke, Ontario, 1913-14. In Canada 1911-15; Enlisted 6th November 1914 at Kingston, Ontario, in 21st Battn., Eastern Ontario Regt., Canadian Exp. Force. Came to the UK with Battalion May 1915. Transferred to 2nd Division Supply Column, Canadian Army Service Corps August 1915. Went to France September 1915. With 10 Squadron Royal Flying Corps as observer December 1916 - July 1917; then to UK for pilot training; trained at Thetford, Ford Farm, Lake Down & Turnberry before being sent to 49 Squadron (Independent Force), France, 31st August 1918. Shot down, severely wounded and prisoner of war 24th September 1918, and died of wounds the same day; serving as a pilot with 49 Sqn. RAF (Beauvois); flying DH.9 with observer 2/Lt. R.H. Armstrong (prisoner of war), on bombing raid to Aulnoye railway junction, east of Cambrai. The 49 Squadron formation was attacked by enemy fighters and lost three aircraft; in addtion one pilot and two observers returned wounded.

Educated at Hunstanton Prep School and Bedford Grammar School, joined the school O.T.C. Commissioned 12th May 1915 into 2/1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Transferred to ‘B’ Company, 1/1st Battalion on 22nd July 1915. At the time of death he was battalion intelligence officer. Son of Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Captain, 1/1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment (Territorial Force) Died of wounds 21 May 1917. Age 41. Husband of M. Chaplin. In the 1911 census he was the huisband of Amelia, father of Eillen Mary (aged 1), aged 35, a Drapery Buyer, born Leytonstone, Essex, resident Dalkeith, Hills Road, Cambridge. Private 16424, Depot, Suffolk Regiment. Died from wounds 23 September 1917. Enlisted at Cambridge 11 November 1914. Born 23 August 1879. Painter by trade. Passed fit 10 November 1914, attested 11 November 1914 aged 35 years 2 months, posted 11 November 1914, suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen while in the field (dangerously ill) 3 July 1916, transferred by hospital ship St Denis to England 6 July 1916, discharged as medically unfit 12 May 1917. Height 5 feet 8 inches. weight 142 lbs, girth 36 inches, complexion fresh, eyes blue, hair brown. His discharge report sates that his discharge is due thim being physically unfit (21 April 1917) with gunshot wounds to the back and abdomen involving his kidneys sustained in action 1 July 1916 near Albert. "Health was fairly good, wounds healed. Gets frequent attacks of pain in Rt side of chest & loin which incapacitates him. Some pleural friction at diaphragmatic attachment. Musculature weak and jumpy." Permanent. Total pevents for 6 months." Death recorded in the Cambridge Registration District July to September Quarter 1917, aged 37. His burial is recorded in the parish of Cambridge, St Andrew the Less, 27 September 1917, aged 39, reeident of 7 St Andrews Court, Cambrodge. In the 1911 census he was the son of Eliza Sunley (a widow), aged 32, unmarried, a House Painter, born Whitby, Yorkshire, resident with his mother at 7 St Andrews Court, Cambridge.
