Flying Officer John David Anne Tharp, The only son of the late Lieut. Col. Gerard Tharp and younger son of Mrs. Tharp, of Chippenham Park who was reported missing from night operations on April 14th 1943, off the coast of Algiers, is now believed to have been killed in action on that date.

When last heard of he was investigating an unidentified aircraft, and unofficial information that parts of both these planes were afterwards found has now been received.

John Tharp, who was 20, would have succeeded to the Chippenham estates on coming of age. Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, he left the University on reaching the age of 18 to volunteer for the R.A.F. He became a nightfighter pilot and, after a year of active service against enemy bombers in England, was posted to the B.N.A.F., and at the time of his death was attached to Coastal Command for special duties. When missing he was on convoy patrol with P.O. David King as radio operator. In the words of his Commanding Officer “together they made the most efficient crew in the Squadron.”
