The Cambridge University, Trinity College World War 2 memorial is in the form of an engraved stone tablet on the west wall of the College Chapel. The west wall of the Ante-Chapel, behind the statue of Newton, is dedicated to a huge memorial of Portland stone, engraved by David Kindersley in 1951 with the names of 384 Trinity men who died in the Second World War

Lieutenant 204884, Royal Corps of Signals. Dangerously ill 16 December 1942, died in the Middle East 31 December 1942. Aged 25. Born 10 April 1917 in Sloane Gardens, London S.W.1. Resident Westmorland. Son of Herwald and Margaret Wake, of Milnthorpe, Westmorland. Educated at Eton. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity, 1 October 1936. B.A. 1939, LL.B (Cantab.) 1940. John Cotton

Served in the U.S. Army. Served in the Military Intelligence in North Africa and Italy. Run over by a truck near Caserta and killed on 18 November 1943. Born 24 February 1912 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Son of Judge Robert Walcott. Educated at Harvard University (graduated 1934). Admitted as Fiske Scholar 1934-35, Affiliated Student at Trinity, 1 October 1934. Married to Cornelia Sage (1935). A novelist, poet, and editor on Atlantic Monthly.

Lieutenant, H.M.S. Bluebell, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 17 February 1945. Aged 30. Born 19 January 1915 at 26 The Drive, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland. Son of Norman Duguid Walker and Ada Walker, of Ryton-on-Tyne, Co. Durham L.LB. Educate at Malvern College. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity, 1 October 1933. B.A. 1936. Awarded Distinguished Service Cross (1 January 1944). In the 1921 census he was the son of Norman Dugnid and Ada Walker, aged 6, born Gosforth, Northumberland, resident 38, Elmfield Road, Gosforth, Northumberland. Much sympathy will be extended to Mr. G. N. Watney, of The Ghyll, Crowborough, in the further sad loss he has sustained by the death last month of his eldest son, Lieut. Michael George Watney, 10th Royal Hussars, who died from wounds received in action. The deceased officer was 22 years of age.

It was only quite recently that his brother, 2nd Lieut. C. H. Watney, died of wounds near Ruwelsat Ridge, Africa

HEADMASTER'S SON

The many friends in Redruth and district of Mr. P. A. Wayne (headmaster of St. Marylebone Grammar School) and Mrs. Wayne, will learn with regret of the official intimation received by them that their only son, Lieut. Michael Hugh Macfall Wayne, 17/21st Lancers, of Wellington College, and Trinity, Cambridge, was killed in action during May. St. Marylebone Grammar School was evacuated to Redruth in September, 1939, and for the ensuing four years Mr. and Mrs. Wayne resided in Redruth, for the greater part 'of the time at Glyn, Albany-road. A talented musician, Wayne became well-known in local musical circles as an accomplished cellist.

OBITUARY
REV. C. L. WEBSTER

The Rev. Claude Francis Webster, whose death has been announced, was a chaplain in the Royal New Zealand Navy. educated at Trinity College and Westcott House, Cambridge, England, he was ordained deacon in 1934, and Priest in 1935. F'rom 1936 to 1937 he was private chaplain to the Bishop of Gibraltar. Later he was curate at Melksham, England. Mr. Webster came to New Zealand, and in 1938 was appoiinted vicar of Mangaweka. In 1942 he was appointed chaplain to a mounted rifles' regiment. In the same year he tranafetred to the Royal New Zealand Navy, and was appointed chaplain on a cruiser.

Killed in action flying out of Matlask, Norfolk, in a Hawker Typhoon IB, serial number JP549, when the aircraft crashed 1 mile north of Bergen airfield during a night intruder sortie to the Alkmaar area 16 August 1943. Born 1 October 1922 in London. Native of St Marylebone, London. Son of James Alexander Webster, C.B., D.S.O., and Constance Webster, of St Marylebone, London. Educated at Stowe School. Killed in action flying out of Middle Wallop, Hampshire, in a Bristol Blenheim I, serial number L6728, when the aircraft crashed at Danebury Hill after losing a propellor in the circuit at Middle Wallop when returning from a night sortie 26 November 1940. Aged 21. Born 21 July 1919 at Shottle Hall, Derby. Native of Idridgehay, Derbyshire. Son of Kenneth Douglas and Harriet Dorothea Bertha Wheatcroft, of Ecclestone Hall, Idridgehay, Derbyshire. Educated at Winchester College. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity, 1 October 1938. PILOT

Officers of the R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve were the bearers at the funeral at Idridgehay Church yesterday of Pilot Officer Nigel Ronald Wheatcroft (21), elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wheatcroft, of Ecclesbourne Hall, Idridgehay, who 'was killed on active service.

Pilot Officer Wheatcroft was a member of the Cambridge University Air Squadron, and was called up at the outbreak of war with the Volunteer Reserve.

He was educated at Winchester College and Trinity College, Cambridge.

The service, which was choral, was conducted by Canon G. A. Hazlehurst, Vicar of Cromford and Rural Dean, and the Rev. S. L. Caiger, Vicar of Wirksworth. Miss Marjorie Hurt played the organ.

Group Captain John Oliver, A.F.C., and Wing Commander N Roy Harben, D.F.C., represented the R.A.F., and the following were the bearers: Flight Lieutenant W. A. H. B. Burnside, Flying Officer G. E. Ferguson, and Pilot Officers D. W. Brown, F. H. Gledhill, A. J. Samson, and G. Watson. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack.

The chief mourners were : Father and mother, Mr. Malcolm Wheatcroft (brother), Mr. Hubert Wheatcroft and Miss Muriel Wheatcroft, and Captain and Mrs. C. J. Wheatcroft, (uncles and aunts), Lieut. Sub-Lieutenant (A) (Pilot), 806 Squadron, H.M.S. Lanka, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Fleet Air Arm. Killed in action flying out of Ratmalana, Ceylon, in a Fairey Fulomar II, shen the aircraft was shot down into the sea by a Japanese A6M after taking off from Ratmalana during an enemy air raid on Ceylon 5 April 1942. Born 19 November 1917 at Winterbourne, Gloucestershire. Son of Sir Henry White-Smith, C.B.E. Educated at Stowe School. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity, 1 October 1936. B.A. 1939. No known grave.
