TYDD ST GILES WAR MEMORIAL

The Tydd St Giles memorial is to be found in the grounds of St Giles Parish Church, Tydd St Giles. It takes the form of a Celtic cross mounted on a shaft mounted on a two tier plinth with a two-stepped base surrounded by ornamental concrete posts supporting a chin link fence. There are 12 names for World War 1, 3 for World War 2 and one for Northern Ireland.

Son of Sophia Clarke, of Four Gotes, Tydd, and the late Thomas Clarke. Formerly 4636 Cambridgeshire Regiment. Buried in Pozieres British Cemetery, Somme, France.

Private 15760, 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action at Kiretch Tepe Sirt in the Suvla sector on 28-11-15, age 22, Gallipoli. Lived Grange Hill Farm, Tydd St Giles. Buried in Azmack Cemetery, Turkey.

20755 L/Cpl, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 1-7-16, age 36. Son of Grimmer Fincham. Husband of Alice Sarah Fincham, of Tydd St Giles. Parents lived Bedlam Corner, March. Buried in Ovillers Military Cemetery, France. His wife is buried in Tydd churchyard, along with 2 of his daughters. See also March and Coldham.

Driver 24105532, 18/26 Squadron, Royal Corps of Transport. Killed by an IRA bomb near Ballygawley, Tyrone, 17th March 1973. The 100/200lb claymore-type mine exploded in front of the Land Rover in which he was travelling. Aged 20. Born 9 July 1952. Son of George and Gertrude Gay of Tydd St Giles, third son of family of six, three girls and three boys. Buried in Tydd St Giles Cemetery, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Row 4. Grave 54.
