The memorial is in the form of marble plaque located inside Exeter Cathedral, within the Devonshire Regiment Chapel, Exeter Cathedral, Cathedral Close, Exeter, which depicts a carved lion and snake beneath two flags. The 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot had previously seen service in India during the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-49) and was thus stationed in India during the Indian Mutiny or Indian Rebellion in 1857 and 1858. The regiment saw service at the Siege of Lucknow (where four Victoria Crosses were awarded to individuals during the siege) and the Battle of Chinhat. In recognition for service in the Mutiny, the regiment was given the additional title of Light Infantry which it held until its amalgamation with the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot in the 1870's into the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. There are 19 names commemorated by rank, name, civilian status. The memorial was created by Mr Richardson (Sculptor).

SICKNESS, IN THE NOBLE DISCHARGE OF THEIR DUTY,

BERKELEY	Charles Asheton Fitzhardinge	Colonel, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Attended Sandhurst Royal Military College, commissioned into the Scots Fusilier Guards on 27 May 1836. Veteran of the Xhosa Wars and Crimean War, awarded Companion of the Order of the Bath on 24 March 1858 for bravery in the Siege of Lucknow. Died of wounds aboard Simla sustained during the Battle of Alambagh, 25 September 1858. Age 39. Son of General Sir George Henry Frederick and Emilia Charlotte Berkeley (neé Lennox). No known grave.
CASE	William	Brevet Lieutenant Colonel [sometimes listed as Major], 32nd Regiment of Foot. Attended Sandhurst Royal Military College, commissioned into the 32nd Regiment on 10 February 1932. Killed in action during the Battle of Chinhat, 30 June 1857. Son of Philip Mallet Case of Testerton House, Pudding Norton, Norfolk. No known grave.
STEEVENS	Charles	Captain, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Killed in action during the Battle of Chinhat, 30 June 1857. Age 39. Brother of Lt-Col. George Steevens of 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot. No known grave.
MOORE	John	Captain, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Born 1824. Killed in the Sati Chowra Massacre [Massacre Ghat] 27 June 1857. Husband of Mrs. Moore listed here. No known grave.
MANSFIELD	James W.	Captain, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Born 1824. Attended Sandhurst Royal Military College, commissioned into the 32nd Regiment on 23 June 1843. Died of wounds 13 September 1857. Age 42/43. No known grave.
POWER	William	Captain, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Died of wounds 10 August 1857. Son of George Power of Cheltenham. No known grave.
MCCABE	Bernard	Captain, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Died of wounds 1 October 1857. No known grave.
DE LE JOLY	Edmond	Captain, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Died of wounds 29 September 1857. No known grave.
THOMPSON	James Dugald	Lieutenant, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Killed in action during the Battle of Chinhat 30 June 1857. Son of Lt-Gen. Alexander Thompson, C.B. of Salruck, County Galway, Ireland. No known grave.
WAINWRIGHT	Frederick	Lieutenant, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Born 1825 in County Tipperary, Ireland. Killed in the Sati Chowra Massacre [Massacre Ghat] 27 June 1857. Husband of Isabella Wainwright and father of Frances Wainwright listed here. No known grave.
WEBB	Pelham Caryer	Lieutenant, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Killed in action 26 September 1857. Age 26. Son of George Webb of Leicester. No known grave.
BRACKENBURY	Joseph	Lieutenant, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Killed in action during the Battle of Chinhat 30 June 1857. Age 25. Son of the Reverend Joseph Brackenbury, Chaplain of Magdelen Hospital. No known grave.
HILL	Evelyn Charles	Lieutenant, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Killed in the Sati Chowra Massacre [Massacre Ghat] 27 June 1857. Son of the late George Hill of Calcutta [Kolkata], husband of Mrs. Hill listed here. No known grave.
STUDDY	William Humphrey	Lieutenant, 32nd Regiment of Foot. Died of wounds 9 August 1857. Age 19. Son of Major J. B. Studdy, formerly of the Bengal Cavalry. No known grave.

COMRADES AND FRIENDS, AS A TOKEN OF ADMIRATION, FOR
THEIR GALLANTRY, FORTITUDE, AND DEVOTION.
