World
War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2008
The memorial
is to be found in the Recreation Ground, Charborough Road, Broadstone,
and is located on the north side. It takes the form of a base upon
which is set a square plinth, a column and then a figure of a female
figure in mourning. The inscription is carved on one side of the column
and around the top of the plinth. The names are listed as "killed
by enemy action" or "killed on active service" and
are affixed to the memorial on plaques. The figure of soldiers and
sailors are carved into two sides of the plinth. There are 44 names
for World War 1 and 30 for World War 2. The memorial was dedicated
in 1920; the designer was Mr Gilbert Bayes. There are also memorials
at John The Baptist Church and as a School memorial, these contain
some of the names listed on the main memorial and some that are not.
To indicate which belong to which memorial they have been identified
with ‡ for main memorial, † for John the Baptist Church
and § for the School.
Note:
The names have been sorted here into true alphabetical order for ease
of research and reading.

returned to France in Dec., and was killed in action during
an air-mid at Kemmel 15 Oct. 1917. His Commanding Officer wrote:
"Your son had been under my charge for some weeks, and
it is with very much pleasure that I am able to record that
he was one of the best, and that his cheerful presence under
adverse circumstances went a long way towards making the lives
of his comrades easier and brighter than what they otherwise
might have been. His last act with me up the line was to volunteer
to assist me in bringing back to a dressing-station a wounded
man, whom I found in a shell-hole, thus perhaps saving his life.
He was a good chap, and I miss him terribly." Unm.
