The war memorial stands at the cross-roads of Heydon Road, Hall Lane, Barley Road and May Street. The memorial takes the form of an obelisk set into a roadside niche in the churchyard wall. There are 13 names for World War 1. For genealogical purposes the boundaries of the county are pre-1974 making Great Chishill an Essex village.

[Listed as EVERETT on memorial] Private, 16605, 8th Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment. 6th Division. Wounded near Ypres and died in hospital in Poperinghe on the 25th October 1915. Son of Mr & Mrs E. Evenett (sic) of Heydon Road, Great Chishill. Born in Great Chishill and enlisted in Royston. Buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinghe, Belgium B.11.

Private 4/6870, 2nd Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment. 30th Division. Killed in action on the Somme 11th July 1916 Born in Great Chishill and enlisted in Royston. Next of kin, Great Chishill. Commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial MR.21

possibly William Oyston, Private 82855 Royal Fusiliers posted to 2nd/2nd Bn., London Regt (Royal Fusiliers) who died on Wednesday, 24th April 1918. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 19 to 21

Private, 1048, 15th (The King's) Hussars who died on Sunday, 1st November 1914. Age 28. Son of Joseph and Sarah Pegram, of Great Chishall Mills, Royston, Herts. Buried in RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND, ZILLEBEKE, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave VI. S. 29/34.

Frank Thomas

Private 24263 7th Bn., Suffolk Regiment who died on Sunday, 20th August 1916. Age 20. Son of Timothy and Ada Rogers, of Hall Lane, Great Chishall. Brother of Bertie, above, and Walter, below. Buried in GREAT CHISHALL (ST. SWITHIN) CHURCHYARD, Cambridgeshire. At East end of church.

Walter [John]

Private 5501, 15th Battalion, Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Killed in action 26th September 1916. Aged 26. Enlisted Kedron Park, Queensland, Australia. Son of Timothy and Ada Julia Rogers, of The Hall Lane, Great Chishall. Brother of Frank and Bertie (above). Prior to enlistment he worked "on the teams" in Brisbane. Originally educated at Gt. Chishill, he emighrated to Australia when he was about 21 years old. Buried in DICKEBUSCH NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot/Row/Section L. Grave 16. Private 5837, 10th Hussars. Admitted to the Star and Garter home, Richmond, Surrey from Voluntery Aid Hospital (No 2), Exeter. Wounded 16th November 1914 in France, aged 23. Discharged from Army on the 12th January 1916, died 25th January 1917. Aged 27. Son of Arthur and Sarah Waller. Born 13th October 1894. Buried in GREAT CHISHILL CEMETERY, Essex.

[List on CWGC as Walters and SDGW as Walter] Private 81650, 15th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry. 21st Division. Killed in action on the Marne during the German Soissons offensive 27th.May 1918. Born in Great Chishill and enlisted in Barnsley,Yorkshire. Next of kin, Great Chishill. Formerly The York & Lancs Reg. (741). Commemorated on The Soissons Memorial MR.18.
