There
are two memorials within Little Horksley, one within the church and
another in the village. The village memorial is to be found at the crossroads
in the village opposite pub. It takes the form of a Latin cross on tapered
shaft atop a plinth with a one step base surrounded by iron railings
and contains the same names as the church plaque; there are no names
for World War 2 just World War 1. It was unveiled and dedicated 30th
May 1920, the builders were Messrs. Deaves and Son. These details were
originally taken from the original dedication sheet used for the unveiling
of the memorial. The war memorial, located at the parish church, was
unveiled by W. OTTER-BARRY, Esq., on Sunday 30th May 1920 after the
3 o'clock service.
To
the Glory of God, and in Memory of
the Men of Little Horkesley who fell in the
Great War, 1914-1918
"Lest
we forget".
The
memorial in the church takes the form of a wooden plaque with the inscription
and names in black and red lettering. The church of St Peter and Paul
was destroyed by a land mine in 1940 and has been completely rebuilt.
