APPLESHAW WAR MEMORIAL AND ROLLS OF HONOUR

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The war memorials are located at St Peter in the Wood Parish Church, Dauntsey Drove (Main Street), Appleshaw. They take the form of two marble memorial plaques in black frames listing those who died in World War 1 and World War 2. There are six names listed for World War 1 and four names for World War 2. Within the Village Hall are two further plaques listing those from the village who served in World War 1 (50 names) and World War 2 (58 names) respectively. The World War 1 names on the memorial do not appear on the list of names who served but the World War 2 names on the war memorial also appear on the names of those who served.

FLAXMAN Walter James
[Not on RoH] Second Lieutenant, Royal Army Service Corps attached to Supply and Transport Corps. Died on service 27 May 1917. Aged 29. Son of the late Alfred George and Emma Caroline Flaxman. No known grave. Commemorated on BASRA MEMORIAL, Iraq. Panel 57 and 66.
DAVIS George Thomas
[Not on RoH] Wheeler Corporal T4/056534, 29th Division Train, Army Service Corps. Killed in action 6 July 1915. Aged 24. Son of Jeremiah Thomas and Jane Davis, of The Green, Appleshaw, Andover, Hants. In the 1911 census he was the son iof Jeremiah Thomas Davis and Jane Davis, aged 20, born Weyhill, Hampshire, a Carpenter's Apprencticem resident Appleshaw, Andover, Hampshire. Disembarked 17 March 1915. Buried in LANCASHIRE LANDING CEMETERY, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Row D. Grave 75. [First World War Campaign Medals entry states he was killed in action 6 July 1919]
REEVES Sidney
[Not on RoH] Driver 38930 [CWGC] or 38980 [SDGW], "K" Battery, 13th Reserve Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery. Died of wounds in United Kingdom 8 March 1918. Aged 30. Born and enlisted Andover, Hampshire. Son of Richard and Emma Reeves, of Andover; husband of Mabel Brown (formerly Reeves), of 20, British Row, Trowbridge. Buried in TROWBRIDGE CEMETERY, Wiltshire. Grave reference O. 2. 2429.
KEEL Harry George
[Not on RoH] Private 20845, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action 23 October 1916. Aged 25. Born Netheravon, Wiltshire, enlisted Andover, Hampshire. Son of Mrs. F. L. Weeks, of Appleshaw, Andover, Hants. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme. France. Pier and Face 7 C and 7 B.

[Not on RoH] Private 6183, "C" Company, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action 26 April 1915. Aged 31. Born Durrington, Wiltshire, enlisted Andover, Hampshire. Son of William and Fanny Weeks, of Appleshaw, Andover, Hants. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 35.
WEEKS William Cecil

[Not on RoH] Air Mechanic 2nd Class 404283 (Driver Mechanised Transport), 114th Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died in Simila, India, of malaria 22 August 1919. Aged 25. Born Amesbury, Wiltshire. Son of Charles and Lydia Weeks, of Appleshaw, Andover, Hants. Attested and joined Royal Flying Corps as Air Mechanic 3rd Class 17 November 1915, aged 21, promoted to Air Mechanic 2nd Class 1 December 1916. Served in India from 1 December 1916. Religious denomination Church of England. Height 5 feet 9½ inches, chest 37 inches. Commemorated on DELHI MEMORIAL (INDIA GATE), India. Face 23. (Buried in Quetta Government Cemetery. Grave 2869.).

In the 1921 census he was the son of Sydney and Selina Harris, aged 3 years 5 months, born Bournemouth, Hampshire, resident The Bakery, Appleshaw, Hampshire. Buried in EL ALIA CEMETERY, Algeria. VEAR Cedric [Frederick Ambrose]
[Spelt VERE on memorial and VEAR on Roll of Honour] Sergeant 547600, 12th Royal Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps. Died of wounds in Italy 9 May 1944. Aged 35. Son of James Henry and Frances Henrietta Vear; husband of Esther Vear, of Aldershot, Hampshire. Buried in SANGRO RIVER WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot V. Row D. Grave 29.

Signalman 14316190, XXI. Corps Signals, Royal Corps of Signals. Died 16 September 1945. Aged 24. Born 22 August 1921, and resident, Hampshire. Son of Thomas Charles and Beatrice Mary Lock, of Appleshaw, Hampshire; husband of Gladys Georgina (nee Dixon) Lock, of Appleshaw, married April to June Quarter 1944 in Andover Registration District, Hampshire. . In the 1939 Register he was the son of Thomas C and Beatrice M Lock, born 22 August 1921, a Poultry Man, single, resident Taunton Cottage, Appleshaw, Andover R.D., Hampshire. Buried in HAMBURG CEMETERY, Hamburg, Germany. Plot 2A. Row L. Grave 8.

[Listed as Jack Charles Bowley on CWGC and other military records] Rifleman 6913263, 1st Battalion, The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own). Missing during the evacuation of Dunkirk 26 May 1940.
