The Pitt War Memorial was originally located in The Chapel of The Good Shepherd, Pitt, Winchester. The Chapel was closed in the 1980’s, and the memorial was relocated to All Saints Church, Hursley, Winchester. The memorial is a wall mounted metal plaque set on a wooden base. There are six names commemorated for World War One.

DUDMAN Thomas
Private 10169, 10th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action at Gallipoli 10th August 1915. Born Hursley, Hampshire, enlisted Winchester. In the 1891 census he was aged 1, born Hampshire, son of Thomas and Alice Dudman, resident Pitt Field, Pitt Hill, Hursley, Winchester, Hampshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born Hursley, a Cowman and Labourer, son of Thomas and Alice Edeman, resident Pitt, Hursley, Winchester, Hampshire. No known grave. Commemorated on Helles Memorial, Turkey. Panel 126-135 or 223-226 228-229 and 328.
FREEBORN Joseph Frank
Ordinary Seaman SS/4969, H.M.S. Amphitrite, Royal Navy. Died from measles and diptheria at R.N. Haslar Hospital 18th January 1916. Aged 22. Born Winchester, Hampshire, 22nd May 1893. Son of Mrs. C. Freeborn, of Emmill Farm, Sparsholt, near Winchester, Hampshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 17, born Hampshire, a Carter of Farm, son of George and Charlotte Elizabeth Freeborn, resident Enmill Farm, Sparsholt, Hursley, Winchester, Hampshire. Farm Labourer before enlistment. Enlisted 28th May 1914 for 5 years and 7 years Reserve. Height 5 feet 7¼ inches, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion. Buried in Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery, Hampshire. Plot E. Row 24. Grave 9.
TONG Thomas Edmund
Corporal 3873, "H" Company, 1st/4th Battalion, Dorset Regiment. Died on service in Mesopotamia 21st July 1916. Aged 28. Born 27 January 1888 in Romsey, Hampshire, resident Portsmouth, Hampshire, enlisted Winchester. Son of Edward and Mary Tong, of Romsey, Hants; husband of Lilian Edith Tong, of 7, Highfield St., Fratton, Portsmouth. Admitted to Crampmoor Church of England School in 10th October 1892, son of Edward Tong, resident New Pond, left 16th September 1898, removed to Romsey. Buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq. Plot VI. Row V. Grave 21.
WILLCOX Medford Charles
[Listed as Midford Charles Willcox with the CWGC] Private 1822, 11th (Service) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action 9th September 1916. Resident Westend, Hampshire, enlisted Bovington Camp, Dorset. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and face 7 C and 7 B.
WOODWARD Harry
Private 2676, 2nd/4th (Territorial Force) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Died on service in Sewree (aka Sewri), Bombay from dysentery 30th June 1916 and buried the same day. Aged 29. Born Cheriton, Hampshire, resident Pitt, Hampshire, enlisted Winchester. In the 1911 census he was aged 24, born Cheriton, Hampshire, a Labourer on Farm, son of Ellen Smith, stepson of Robert Smith, resident Abbotstone Cottage, Alresford, Itchen Stoke, Hampshire; brother of Wilfred (below). Admitted to H.M. Hospital Ship Assaye" 18th May 1916 with dysentery, disembarked at Bombay 23rd May 1916. Originally buried in Sewri Cemetery, Bombay 30th June 1916. Commemorated on Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial, India. Face D.
WOODWARD Wilfred
[Listed as Private, 4th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment on memorial] Lance Corporal 26048, 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry formerly 14th Reserve Cabvalry Regient. Killed in action 15th October 1916. Aged 26.Born Alresford, Winchester, enklisted Winchester. Son of Ellen J. Smith (formerly Woodward), of Shipton Farm Cottages, Woodstock, Oxon, and the late Charles Woodward. In the 1911 census he was aged 19, born Winall, Winchester, Hampshire, a Labourer on Farm, son of Ellen Smith, stepson of Robert Smith, resident Abbotstone Cottage, Alresford, Itchen Stoke, Hampshire; brother of Harry (above). Buried in Bancourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Plot VIII. Row F. Grave 10.
