Exstract from De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour 19140-1918, Volume 4, page 15: BLATHWAYT, HENRY WYNTER, Major, Royal Field Artillery, yst. s. of the late Charles George Blathwayt, I.C.S., of Salcombe House, Sidmouth, by his wife, Alice Mary, dau. of the Rev. Hugh Fowler; b. Malligaum, Bombay Presidency, 19 Sept. 1877 ; educ. Rugby, and at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he obtained his degree ; gazetted 2nd Lieut. R.F.A. 26 May, 1900; promoted Lieut. 11 March, 1902, Capt. 23 Feb. 1911, and Major 30 Oct. 1914 ; was Adjutant of the 24th Brigade, and 2nd Home Counties Brigade ; served with the Indian Expeditionary Force in India and Mesopotamia from Aug. 1914 ; invalided home in Sept. 1916, and on recovery served with various brigades in England and Ireland ; proceeded to France 18 Oct. 1917, being attached to the 75th and 74th Brigades, and was killed in action near Cambrai 30 Nov. following. Buried in the Flesquires Château Cemetery. His Brigadier-General wrote : "He endeared himself to everyone by his unfailing pluck and good temper under the stress of battle," and his Colonel : "He was a most kindly; chivalrous gentleman, who had no thought for self or for his own advancement, but desired only to pull his weight—his full weight, to help to win the war." Another officer also wrote : "He had only taken over command a few days before we moved into the Cambrai battle. Throughout that most trying time, and especially on 30 Nov., he fought his battery with great courage and endurance, giving a tine example to both officers and men."
