PILLING ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL

The church of St John at Pilling was built in the late 19th century. The war memorial stands at the front of the church and contains the names of 12 local men who were killed in WW1, and one man who died in WW2.

Private 8th Battalion, The Kings (Liverpool Regiment). 57th Division. Killed in action 13th September 1918. Age 19. Son of William and Mary Anner of The Ship Inn, Pilling. Born Pilling, enlisted Lancaster. Resident of Pilling. Commemorated on the VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 3 & 4.

BRADLEY

Richard

Lieutenant. 4th Battalion Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment (“D” Company). 55th Division. Killed in action 31st July 1917 - the opening day of 3rd Battle of Ypres. Age 24. Son of Richard and Emma Bradley, Can House, Pilling. Born 23th January 1893 in Pilling. Educated at Blackpool and St Johns College, York. Employed as an Assistant Master at Earlestown District School, Lancashire. Enlisted Inns of Court OTC (Regimentl no 6572) 1st October 1915. Served in 16th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Commissioned 22nd January 1916. Commemorated on the MENIN GATE MEMORIAL, Ypres. Panel 12

Private 47620. 3rd Battalion, Wellington Regiment, New Zealand E.F. Killed in action 4th October 1917, during the Battle of Broodsiende (3rd Ypres). Age 34. Son of Jeremiah and Isabella Ann Butler of Chestnut House, Pilling. Born Pilling. Buried TINE COT CEMETERY, Zonnebeke, Belgium. Plot XVIII. Row C. Grave 13

Private 21873, 8th Battalion Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment. 3rd Division. Killed in action 19th May 1916 at Kemmel. Age 38. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Carter of 17 Higher Green, Poulton le Fylde. Born Pilling, enlisted Blackpool in 1915. Occupation labourer. Buried in KEMMEL CHATEAU MILITARY CEMETERY, Heuvelland, Belgium. Row D. Grave 25

Private 33076. 5th Battalion, Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment. Died of Pneumonia 24th May 1917 at Wesham Military Hospital, Lancashire. Age 19. Son of the late Robert and Mary Curwen, formerly of Springfield Cottages, Pilling. Born Pilling. Employed as a farm labourer in Pilling before the war. Probably enlisted late 1916. Buried in PILLING (ST JOHN THE BAPTIST) OLD CHURCHYARD. Pilling, Lancashire. West of the church, north of the path.

Private 203432. 10th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. 37th Division. Missing, presumed killed in action 28th April 1917 during the Battles of Arras. Age 20. Son of Richard and Margery Hall of Pilling. Brother of Private Thomas F Hall (d.w. 26.10.18). Brother of George A Hall of Old Can Farm, Pilling. Born Pilling. Enlisted Garstang 31st October 1916. Employed as a joiner before the war. Buried CANADIAN CEMETERY NO 2, Neuville-St Vaast, Pas de Calais, France. Plot 15. Row G. Grave 16.

HALL

Thomas Fairclough

Private 24230. 2nd/5th Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment. 57th Division. Received a gun shot wound to his thigh on 24 October 1918, and died of these wounds 26th October 1918. Age 24. Son of Richard and Margery Hall of Pilling. Brother of Private Richard A Hall (Killed in action 28.4.17). Widower of Alice Hall (nee Winchester) who died of tubercular peritonitis in July 1917 age 21. They married on June 28th 1914. Their son died in infancy. Born Pilling. Enlisted Garstang in 1916. Employed as a horseman on a farm. Buried in ESTAIRES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Nord, France. Plot V. Row G. Grave 7.

** Another brother JAMES HALL was a Territorial before the war, and committed suicide the day after Britain entered the War, on 5th August 1914. So in effect this family suffered three war losses.

Driver 43387. 133rd Army Troops Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 9th September 1916. A newspaper report states “whilst mixing provender in a shed, he was struck by a shell”. Age 20. Son of William and Grace Hornby of Station Road, Pilling. Brother of Lcpl William Homby (Killed in action 23rd March 1918). Born Preesall. Enlisted in Garstang in 1914. Employed as a farm labourer in Nateby before the war. Buried in FRICOURT NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, Somme, France. Row A. Grave 1.

HORNBY

Lance Corporal 260332. 7th (Westmoreland & Cumberland Yeomanry) Battalion, Border Regiment. 17th Division. Missing presumed killed in action 23rd March 1918 during the German offensive. Age 24. Son of William and Grace Hornby of Station Road, Pilling. Brother of Nicholas Hornby (Killed in action 9.9.16). Born Pilling. Enlisted at Penrith on 14th September 1914 into “B” Squadron Pt/Pt Westmoreland & Cumberland Yeomanry, which was absorbed into 7th Border Regiment and transferred to infantry in September 1917. Employed as a farm servant before the war at Stakepool, Lancashire. Commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 6.

JENKINSON

Private 38868. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. 30th Division. Killed in action 25th April 1917 by shellfire during the Battles of Arras. Age 33. Son of Richard and Jennet (Janet) Jenkinson of May Vale, Pilling formerly of Union Farm, Pilling. Born Pilling, enlisted Garstang in September 1916. Employed on the family farm before the war. Commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calas, France. Bay 5.

Private 241137. 2nd/5th Battalion Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment. 57th Division. Killed in action 28th September 1918 during an attack on the Canal du Nord. Age 24. Son of Mrs Agnes Ronson, Lancaster Road, Pilling, and the late George Ronson. Born Pilling. Enlisted Garstang 1915. Commemorated on the VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 3.
