WHITTON WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located in St John the BaptistChurch, Whitton, Lincolnshire. It takes the form of a large oak board with a carved inscription in gold painted lettering and the surround being of carved roses. There are three names listed Wor World War 1 and three names listed Wor World War 2.

BARLEY Frank Holgate
Private 50585, 11th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment)). Killed in action 14 April 1917. Aged 22. Born Whitton, Lincs, resident Doncaster, Yorks, enlisted Lincoln. Son of Frank and Alice Barley. Buried in YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. anel 39 and 41.
SPILMAN Henry
Corporal 14/86, 8th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. Died of wounds 2 May 1917. Aged 21. Born Whitton, Lincs, resident Doncaster, Yorks, enlisted Hull. Son of Thomas and Helena Blanche Spilman, of Cliffhouse, Whitton, Scunthorpe. Buried in DUISANS BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row B. Grave 9.
STANDERLINE Harry
Corporal 7511, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 23 April 1915. Born Saxby-All-Saints, Lincs, resident Whitton, enlisted Barton-On-Humber, Lincs. Buried in SPOILBANK CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row H. Grave 10.
1939-1945
BRAY Robert John
Private 14400584, 5th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 8 January 1944. Aged 19. Born and resident Lincolnshire. Buried in CASSINO WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot VII. Row K. Grave 20.
FOSTER William Percival
Able Seaman C/JX 190419, H.M.S. "Martin," Royal Navy. Died at sea 10 November 1942. Aged 23. Born 24 October 1919 in Whitton, Lincolnshire. Son of Samuel and Annie Foster, of Whitton, Lincolnshire. In the 1939 Register he was unmarried, a Plasterer (Heavy Worker), resident with his parents at East View, Chapel Lane, Whitton, Winterton, Glanford Brigg R.D., Lincolnshire. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 54, Column 1.
SPILMAN Thomas Levick Noel
Corporal 7938807, Royal Armoured Corps, 27th Lancers. Died 23 October 1944. Aged 21. Son of Thomas Levick Spilman and Kate Spilman, of Whitton, Lincolnshire. Buried in CESENA WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot VII. Row F. Grave 13.
