Short description of the St Luke's area

St Luke's was a large, crowded parish in Old St, EC1, just beyond the wall, on the north side of the City of London. The church was built circa 1730 as part of a programme to provide for the increasing population, particularly to relieve the adjoining parish of St Giles Cripplegate. The roof was taken off in 1959, as the building had become unsafe and the parish was reunited with St Giles Cripplegate. The shell of St Luke's is still there, with its distinctive spire in the shape of an obelisk, in its churchyard.

The area generally known as St Luke's is bounded by Goswell Rd, City Rd and the northern City boundary. It was part of the Borough of Finsbury, and is now part of the London Borough of Islington. The London Metropolitan Archives has most of the church's records, but some vestry records are held by the Islington Local Studies Archives.

St Luke's was a registration district for Biths, Marriages and Deaths and the census from 1837 to 1869, when it became part of the Holborn Rd.

Rahere St was in Finsbury, between Morland St and Lever St, but seems to have been redeveloped since the war with a school on the site. Bartholomew Square is adajacent to the church, to the west. Charles Booth's survey shows it as a very mixed area about 1889.
