HASKETON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The Hasketon War Memorial can be found at the roadise opposite the parish church and takes the form of Portland stone Celctic cross on a two stepped base. There are 26 names for World War 1 listed and 3 for World War 2. The memorial was dedicated on 7th December 1919 by the Rev. Canon C D Lawrence. The builder was Mr A C Stepheson. Details of the dedication can be found in the East Anglian Daily Times 8th December 1919. A special dedication to two of the men who fell in World War 1 can be found on the reredos within the church.

Percy Arthur Wells

Midshipman, Royal Navy, HMS Queen Mary. Lost with his ship 31/05/1916. Age 18. Son of the Rev F W Wait MA and Mrs Wait of Hasketon Rectory, Woodbridge. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. On 31st May 1916, HMS Queen Mary was part of the 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron that took part in the Battle of Jutland. During the battle HMS Queen Mary was hit by gunfire from the German vessels Seydlitz and Derfflinger and exploded, killing all but 8 of her 1,276 crew
