The memorial takes the form of a marble plaque in the entrance porch of St Margaret's Church. It was unveiled on 30th January 1921 by Lord Somerleyton, recorded in the East Anglian Daily Times 5th February 1921. The memorial contains 12 names for World War 1 listed by surname, forename, rank and Regiment, there is one name for World War 2. There is also a Roll of Honour in the church listing those who served including those who died. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of research and reading.

"Victory", Royal Navy who died age 26 on 25 May 1918 Son of Benjamin and Martha Brown, of 4, Widows Cottage, Somerleyton, Lowestoft. Born at Ashby, Lowestoft. Born 14 February 1891 Lowestoft, Suffolk (as naval record, born Ashby, Suffolk on census and CWGC). Buried in MAZARGUES WAR CEMETERY, MARSEILLES, Bouches-du-Rhone, France. Plot IV. Row A Grave 36.

Note: naval record has him with shore establishment HMS ‘Victory’ yet buried in France, appears some dispute between records?

[Robert William Browne on 1889 birth record, William Robert Brown on other records.] Lance Corporal 10354, 1st Battalion, King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry) who was killed in action, aged 26, on 8 May 1915. Born Yarmouth, enlisted Goole. Son of Benjamin and Martha Brown(e) of White House Cottages, Herringfleet, Suffolk. Born 1889 Great Yarmouth, NFK (as SDGW, born Ashby, Suffolk on census) and enlisted Goole, YKS. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 47.

FLAXMAN

Marcus Barry
Able Seaman, Royal Naval Reserve.
[Listed as B M FLAXMAN and Able Seaman on memorial - Marcus Barry Flaxman most records, Barry Marcus Flaxman on few records.] Trimmer 5046TS, H.M. Trawler "Loch Ard", Royal Naval Reserve (sunk by mine laid by German submarine UC-14). Killed in action 10 September 1917. Son of Marcus and Lucy Flaxman. Husband of Gertrude May Flaxman (nee Culley) of St Olaves, NFK. Born 4 July 1880 Haddiscoe, NFK. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panle 27.

Son of Herbert de Mussenden and Agnes Isabel Leathes. Born St Leonards, SSX and resident Herringfleet Hall, Suffolk (as probate). Buried in BUNYANS CEMETERY, TILLOY-LES-MOFFLAINES, Pas de Calais, France. Plot/Row/Section B Grave 1.
