The
memorial is in the form of a Portland stone cross mounted on an octagonal,
York stone, two stepped base found in the churchyard of St Peter and
St Paul Church. There are 18 names listed for World War 1 and 4 for
World War 2. The Mr E C Green was the Mason for the memorial which was
unveiled by Brigadier-General J A Coxhead 20th March 1921; the monies
were raised by public subscription. Details of the memorial appeared
in the South West Suffolk Echo 26th March 1921. In addition within the
church are two scrolls one being a Roll of Men connected with Kedington
who served 1914-1919 (124 names) and the other being a Prayer List for
those who were serving during World War 2 which has a start year of
1939 but the end year is 194-. Both list have been transcribed; the
World War 2 list has been sorted into name order within service for
ease of reading.

The London Regt, (T.F.), 4th s. of the Rev. Barrington
Blomfield Syer, Rector of Kedington, by his wife. Amy Katherine,
dau. of the Rev. Dr. Wright; b. Kedington Rectory,
co. Suffolk, 10 March, 1878; educ. at Eastward Ho!
College, Felixstowe; was on the London Stock Exchange; joined
the London Scottish 6 March, 1895; served in the South African
War 1899-1902, attached to the Gordon Highlanders; rejoined
the London Scottish, and volunteered for foreign service on
the outbreak of the European War; obtained a commission as 2nd
Lieut. 1 Sept. 1914, and was promoted Captain 13 Nov. following;
served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from
30 Dec. 1914; took part in the Battle of Loos in Sept. 1915;
was Regimental Transport Officer at Boulogne for a few months
in 1916; rejoined his regiment in July, and died in St. Thomas's
Hospital. London, 18 Nov. following, from wounds received in
action on the Somme 19 Sept. His Colonel wrote: “Captain
Syer embodied everything which a soldier should be; a wonderful
organizer, brave almost to a fault, he at all times set an example
of courage and endurance under hardships and peril. He was beloved
by all ranks, and his death is a severe loss to the regiment
and the British Army. I have lost a splendid officer."
Captain Syer was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 1
Jan. 1916) by F.M. Sir John (now Lord) French, for gallant and
distinguished service in the field, and was awarded the Military
Cross [London Gazette, 14 Jan. 1916) for meritorious service
in the field at Loos. He m. at Holy Saviour's, Tynemouth,
Northumberland, 12 Sept. 1908, Helen May, youngest dau. of the
Rev. Canon Herbert S. Hicks, MA., Rural Dean and Vicar of Tynemouth
Priory; s.p.

Catlin (1863-1950). Born in Kedington, Suffolk about 1898. Baptised
at St Peter & St Paul Church, Kedington on 11 September 1898.
Census 1901 shows the family in 7, Mill Lane, Kedington with father,
Isaac an agricultural labourer. Census 1911 shows the family, minus
father who has died, still at the same address. Oliver served with
the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment during World War One
(service number: 39799). He enlisted on 26 September 1916, giving
his address as 10, Lower Anchor Street, Chelmsford, Essex and his
occupation as a machinist. He served several tours in France interspersed
with home front duties, and was discharged on 18 October 1919. He
died in Suffolk in 1949. He never married. |

at St Peter & St Paul Church, Kedington on 12 August 1888. Census
1891 & 1901 shows the family in 7, Mill Lane, Kedington with
father, Isaac still an agricultural labourer. George himself is
working as a farm labourer at the age of 15. Census 1911 shows the
family, minus father who has died, at the same address and Walter
still a labourer. Joined the Sherwood Foresters on 15 March 1916
during World War One, service number 5127. He was described as being
5 feet 5 inches tall. He was also seconded to the Labour Corps (Service
number 203360) and to the West Yorks Regiment. He served two tours
of duty at the Western Front in France totalling nearly two years.
He was discharged on 28 January 1919. It is worth noting that he
was hospitalised for three weeks in 1918 with Spanish influenza.
Died in Kedington in 1968. He never married. |

HMS Natal when she blew up in Cromarty Firth (and was rescued by
his future brother in law Walter Robinson - see below) and because
of his gunnery skills was assigned to Q Ships and was later sunk
again, this time being recued by an american sailor. |
