Unveiling's
of Swcffling’s War Memorial.
On
Sunday afternoon the Sweffling Church was crowded to its utmost limits,
on the occasion of the unveiling of the tablet erected — near
the pulpit, on the north wall of the Church — in memory of the
fourteen Sweffling men killed in the Great War. The service was conducted
by the Rev. L. B. Delap (Benhall), assisted by the Rev. H. Keys Moore
(rector), and members of all religious denominations from Sweffling
and the adjoining parishes were present.
In
the course of impressive sermon, the Rev. L. B. Dclap showed how these
men, by their self sacrifice on behalf of their King and country, have
earned God's pardon and grace, as did Abraham of old, when he offered
to sacrifice his only son Isaac in obedience to the command of the Almighty.
The memorial, which consists of a white polished marble slab, on a base
of black mar- (sic) is the work of Mr. G. Dale, of Framlingham. It is
surmounted by a tiny cross, and bears, in block capitals, the following
inscription : "In memory of Sweffling men who fell in the Great
War, 1014—1919 : Pte. G. Stophcr, Pte. A. Stopher, Pte. M. Denny.
Pte. S. Denny, Pte. F. Sherwood, Pte. W. Goodwin, Pte. F. Barham. Pte.
C. Batley, Pte. H. Stone (Suffolk Regiment), Pte. G. Tye, Pte. A. Moss
(Norfolk Regiment), Pte. K. Smith, (Cheshire Regiment). Pte. E. Leggett
(Northamptons), Pte L. Hammett (H.M S. Harwich). ‘Until the day
break and the shadows flee away.’"M
ajor-General
Smith, who resides in Sweffling, performed the ceremony. He said that
the sacrifice made by Sweffling, with its population of 240, was comparable
with that of any village or city in the United Kingdom. The fourteen
men named on the tablet, who had given their lives in the interests
of freedom and civilization, and for the benefit of us and generations
yet to come, had earned the right to a constant place in our thoughts,
and by their "supreme self-sacrifice" had gained everlasting
salvation.
Following
the unveiling, the Rev. L. B. Delap dedicated the memorial to the glory
of God and in everlasting memory of those whose names it bore. A collection,
taken on behalf of the completion of the memorial funds, realised £2
7s. 6d.
