Bodle Street Green is a very small village (almost a hamlet), approximately 10 miles from Bexhill. The memorials can be found in the grounds of the parish church of St John The Evangalist.

Private P.W.5850, 12th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Killed in action 3rd May 1917 in France & Flanders. Age 32. Born Marden, Kent, enlisted Chichester, resident Heathfield. Son of William and Ada Cora Baker, of Bank Cottage, Stunt's Green, Herstmonceux, Sussex. Formerly 25098, Northamptonshire Regiment. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 7.

Possibly Private SD/3735 11th (1at South Down) Bn Royal Sussex Regiment. Died of Wounds 25 July 1917, buried Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Born in Warbleton, enlisted in Hastings.

Private 59861, 3rd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Died at home 30th October 1918. Age 28. Born Brightling, enlisted Eastbourne. Son of James and Jessie Croft, of London House, Bodle Street Green. Buried in ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHURCHYARD, BODLE STREET GREEN, Sussex.

Son of Walter and Ann Daniels, of Chilthurst, Bodle Street, nr. Hailsham, Sussex. Buried in AUCHONVILLERS MILITARY CEMETERY, Somme, France. Plot II. Row J. Grave 1.

DAWE

George

Private G/36835, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment).  Possibly died of wounds 4th November, 1918 in France. Age 24.  Born in Hurstmonceux about 1892. Enlisted in Guildford and served with the Queen’s ( Royal West Surrey Regiment), Service Number 2316. Resided in Hailsham. Son of Jabez and Esther Dawe, of Cowbeach,  nr. Hailsham, Sussex.  Buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France, S. 111. H. 5.

Note:  Eight general, five stationary, one British Red Cross and one labour hospital, plus the No. 2 Convalescent Depot hospital were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen, and almost all of them remained there for practically the whole of the war.  The great majority of the dead were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever.  In September of 1916, it was found necessary to begin an extension.

FAIRALL

George Henry

Lance Corporal 30227 246th Company Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Killed in action 23 September 1917. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Enlisted in Eastbourne, served with the Royal Sussex Regiment, Service Number 5330. Soldiers Died in the Great War states he was born in Tunbridge Wells, enlisted in Eastbourne and was resident in Hurstmonceux. However no George Fairall has been found born in Tunbridge Wells.

Rifleman 44832, 15th (Service) Battalion(North Belfast), Royal Irish Rifles.  Formerly of the Royal Sussex Regiment, service number 4909.  Killed in action 22nd November, 1917 in France.  Age 19.  Enlisted in Brighton, served with Royal Sussex Regiment, Service Number 4909. Born in Heathfield about 1897. Son of Frederick and Caroline Mepham, Bemzells Cottage, Hurstmonceux.  Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, The Somme, France, Pier and Face 15 A and 15 B.

MESSAGE

Private 58686, 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment.  Killed in action 10th October, 1918 in France.  Born Herstmonceux about 1891. Commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France, Panel 7.

ROBERTS

Wilfred

Private 74194, Devonshire Regiment.  Not known whether he was killed in action or died of wound on the 27th September, 1918 in Franace.  Age 20. Born in Heathfield about 1898, son of Mrs M E Roberts, The Stores, Bodle St. Son of Mrs. M. E. Roberts, of The Stores, Bodle Street, Hailsham, Sussex.  Buried in the La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, France, III. D. 12.

Note: The British Cemetery formerly known as Aux-Rietz Military Cemetery, was begun at the end of April, 1917, and used by Field Ambulances and fighting units until September, 1918.

VENESS

[Frederick William]

Frederick William Veness, Private G/2127, 8th (Pioneer) Bn Royal Sussex Regiment. Died 8th September 1916. Commemorated on Pier and Face 7 of the Thiepval Memorial. Born about 1893 in Vinehall, Mountfield, East Sussex. Son of William and Alice Veness.

Son of Thomas Ernest and Lara Louise Stewart Hincks of Bexhill. (His brother, Thomas Stewart Hincks died 2 November 1943. Lieutenant Ceylon Pioneers, buried Trincomalee War Cemetery). Buried in Caestre Communal Cemetery, Nord, France, Plot 5. Row B. Grave 3.

Squadron Leader 64377, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.  Died 7th August, 1943.  Age 51.  Son of Frederick Charles and Emily Green; husband of Cecilia Violet Gordon Green, of Cowbeech, Sussex.  Buried in the El Alia Cemetery, Algeria, 12. E. 23.

BRETT

Eric [Victor]

Possibly Private 5772703, 5th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.  Died 21st May, 1943 whilst a P.O.W.   Aged 27. Buried in the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand, 2. O. 45.

Note:  This cemetery contains the graves of nearly 7,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died due to illness or maltreatment while prisoners of war of the Japanese.  Near Kanchanaburi was Kanburi POW Base Camp and associated hospitals. Most prisoners who worked on the railway passed through here on their way to other camps.  Due to problems created by climatic conditions in the region the traditional Portland headstones are not used. The casualty's details are instead recorded on bronze plaques mounted on low pedestals.
