Note from Paul Nixon: Visited William H Beard (grandson) on 14th October 2002. Pte Beard worked as an agricultural labourer at Bineham Farm prior to enlistment. Had four sons: George (eldest), William (2nd eldest), Jack and Frank. William was the father of William H Beard (grandson) and worked for James Hobden & Sons, Haulage Contractors, Chailey, Sussex. The photograph was taken of him standing next to the Hobden & Sons lorry (on the left). The wagon displays "The Garrett Wagon" nameplate above the split windscreen and the name "Garrett" below it (topped by - presumably- its emblem in the form of a wild cat. The reg no is PN-5113 (which would be extremely valuable now!) On the side of the cab is shown" Speed 12MPH, with trailer 8MPH, and the forward of the two rear axles appears to be chain-driven. William H Beard was unsure where the photo was taken. It has now been found that the lorry was on the road leading west from the top of the High Street. After passing the church on the south side of the road, the road dips down sharply. The photo was taken in that dip, outside the Old Malt House Antiques shop. The present Kenward Trust's address in Uckfield is given as The Malt House, Church Street, Uckfield.
