GLENLUCE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

Memorial stands at the south side of the road beside the village park. It has 53 names for World War 1 and 10 names for World War 2. The 10 names are of Newluce and Glenluce. There are no ranks or Regiments given, and just initials. (Grid Reference: NX202573) The memorial takes the form of a small, sqaure cenotaph with a laurel wreath carved near the top of each memorial face. The whole stands on a tapepered plinth and is inset into a walled area.

Erected to the memory and in honour the men connected with the Parish of Old Luce who fell in the Great War 1914-1919

HUNTER, BENTLEY MOORE, M.B., Ch.B., Capt., R.A.M.C., 5th s. of Charles Hunter, of The School House, Dunragit, B.A., by his wife, Susan, dau. of William Riddell, of Aldous, co. Ayr ; b. Glenluce, co. Wigtown, 28 April, 1888 ; educ. Stranraer High School, and Glasgow University, where he graduated M.B., Ch.B. (Prizeman and Medallist); was an Assistant at Consett, and afterwards at Stevenston, co. Ayr ; obtained a commission 15 May, 1915, being attached to the 1st Battn. The Cambridgeshire Regt., and sent out to Mudros (Lemnos) and Egypt ; subsequently served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, and was killed in action near Ypres 31 July, 1917. Buried at Steenbeek. Langemarck, north of Ypres. His Commanding Officer wrote : " Your son was killed trying to save the lives of others, as he had done so many times before. I, fortunately, had the satisfaction of telling him some few days before that I had recommended him for some sort of award," and his Chaplain : " His staff say they will never have another like him. He was so generous-minded and willing to help others. I shall never forget the way he carried on down south when the other medical officer was killed. He was simply splendid." He was recommended for decoration by Brigadier- General E. Riddell, 11.5.0.; unm.
