He was born in West Bergholt and at some time lived at 16 Thrifts Walk. Also he married a Mrs. M. Rayner and they had two children. After enlisting at Bury in May 1917 as private No.22299 in the East Kent Regiment, he was later transferred to the 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers as private No. 57272. In July 1917 he went to France and was home again on leave in February 1918. The Cambridge Daily News of 5th November 1918 and the Cambridge Chronicle both report "he was killed by a sniper whilst pointing out some Germans on 8th October 1918". His grave is in the St. Aubert British Cemetery, plot 4, row C, grave 22. The Cemetery is between Valenciennes and Cambrai, and it contains 434 graves. See also Chesterton and Chesterton Arbury |

Extract from Cambridge Daily News - Tuesday 24 July 1917, page 4: ENOUGH C3 MEN AT PRESENT. Archibald Harold Reed (31) single, 32, Beche-Road, confidential clerk, cashier and bookkeeper, classed C3, was applied for by his employer, Mr. Charles Kerridge, junior, Sturton-street, builder and contractor. Mr. Miller: I agree to temporary exemption until called up. Mr. Reed: I have got a calling-up notice. Mr. Miller replied that if Mr. Reed wentto the Recruiting Office the notice would be cancelled. Mr. Reed was the kind of man the Army was wanting, but at present they had enough clerks, and were cancelling some the notices issued. If he got another calling-up notice he could apply again. married 5 years to helen Jane with onem infant daughter, aged 39,
bricklayer, born Cambridge, resident with his family at 7 Garden
Cottage, Bermuda Road, Histon Road, Chesterton, Cambridge. No known
grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL Somme, France. Pier and
Face 10 B 11 B and 12 B.

Church School. In the 1901 census he was aged 4, born Cambridgeshire,
son of Richard M and Florence M Ryan, resident 25, Stockwill Street,
Cambridge. Admitted to Cambridge Romsey Junior Middle School 14
September 1909, son of Richard Ryan. In the 1911 census he was aged
14, born Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, a Page Boy, son of Richard May
and Florence Maud Ryan, resident 29, Mawson Road, Cambridge. Buried
in GUARDS CEMETERY, WINDY CORNER, CUINCHY, Pas de Calais, France.

Ryder, in Water Lane, Birchanger (Essex), Bishop Stortford. No known
grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey (including Gallipoli).
