Pre-war Territorial serving in A company, 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment. Awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal 30-10-1909. Terminated his service 05-04-1911. Re-enlisted in "A company, in 1911, as No.1206. Married, resident at 21a Emery Street, Cambridge. Employed as a compositor by the Cambridge University Press. Mobilised with the Cambridgeshire Regiment on 04-08-14 and afterwards transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. Prior to this he was Company Quartermaster-Sergeant and Company Sergeant-Major in the 1/1st Cambridgeshire Regiment. Landed in France in February 1915 and went to front with the Cambridgeshire Regiment 14-02-15. Son of Edward and Mary Anne Aves, 8, Gwydir Street, Cambridge. Brother-in-law to G W Collins who also fell.
