Cambridge
R.A.F. Pilot
NEWS has reached Cambridge that Sergeant Pilot Charles W.
Daisley was killed in action at Dunkirk.
His body has been taken from the sea, at Cap Gris Nez.
Sergt. Daislev had been an assistant at the Cambridge Borough
Library for three years, and intended to take up the librarian
work as a career. He was educated at the Cambridge and County
High School.
Daisley was a prominent sportsman, having played for Cambridge
Town at Rugby and for the local branch of the N.A.L.G.O. at
cricket. He had been missing since May. 28th, 1940.
He joined the Volunteer Air Reserve in 1937, and was called

A
CAMBRIDGE AIRMAN'S
GRAVE IN FRANCE.
THIS story of the kindly thought of an unknown friend in France
for the parents of a Cambridge man who was shot down during
the fighting at Dunkirk, was told me this week. The airman was
Sergt. Pilot L. C. W. Daisley, and his father and mother, Mr.
and Mrs. L J. Daisley, of 10, Chalmers Road, have just received
in a roundabout way a photograph of his grave. The picture was
sent in an envelope simply addressed to “The B.B.C., Londres.”
Through inquiries at the Air Ministry the address of the parents
was traced, and the European Services Division of the B.B.C.
then wrote to Mr. Paisley as follows:
“Your
name and address have been given to us by the Air Ministry following
the receipt from one of our listeners in France of the enclosed
envelope and photograph, There is no indication of the name
and whereabouts of the sender of the photograph and all we know
about it is the indication on the postmark, i.e., Perigeux (Dordogne),
27th February, 1942. The inscription on the grave is:
ICI
Repose Le Corps de Did L.C.W.
Serjent Aviateur de R.A.F.
Matricule 34127,
Corps Retrouvi,
Le 21 Juin 194—
At the invitation of the B.B.C., Mr. Daisley has already sent
a message of thanks to the unknown sender of the photograph.
This has been broadcast in the French service.
