The Northwold war memorial takes the form of a cross close to the church of St Andrew's, Northwold and takes the form of a plain cross on a four-tiered plinth with and inscription and tablet added to the front for World War 2. There are 30 names for World War 1 and 9 for World War 2 (both these have yet to be transcribed). There is also a Roll of Honour for Northwold within the church of St Andrew's in the form of a framed handwritten scroll with 35 names for World War 1. THe names marked with an asterisk (*) are the 28 men named in the Norfolk Roll of Honour 1914-1918 originally printed in the Eastern Daily Press May-December 1919.

A Farm Labourer in 1906, a Political Agent in 1914). Born Foulden, Stoke Ferry, Norfolk 18th June 1888. Son of Agnes Eagle of Little London, North Wood, nr Stokes Ferry. He was ex-Private CH/15646 Royal Marine Light Infantry, enlisted Norwich 20th July 1906 until 21st May 1910 when he was discharged as an invalide. Re-enlisted in London 25th August 1914; with Deal Battalion at Dunkirk & Defence of Antwerp 1914 then Mesopotamian Expeditonary Force 28th February 1915; wounded in the thigh at Anzac 1st May 1915. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 1 A.

In the 1901 census he was aged 3, born Norfolk, resident with his parents, Philip and Elinor (sic) Harbord, at The Hall, Lammas with Little Hautbois, Aylsham, Norfolk. Captain. Norfolk Yeomanry. Died on 10th July 1918 of wounds received near Nieppe Forest on 6th July. Aged 24. Native of Norfolk. Born 12 August 1893, baptised 16 October 1893 in Southrepps, son of Philip and Eleanor Julia Hardbord. Son of Philip and Elinor Julia Harbord, of Northwold Lodge, Brandon, Norfolk; nephew of Lionel Anthony Harbord, brother of Philip Anthony Harboard (see above). Awarded the Military cross (M.C.). In the 1901 census he was aged 7, born Mayfair, London, son of Philip and Elinor (sic) Harbord, resident The Hall, Lammas with Little Hautbois, Aylsham, Norfolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 17, born St Georges, Hanover Square, London, a University Student, son of Philip and Elinor S9ic) Harbord, resident Bulmer House, Bulmer, Essex. Extract from Essex Newsman 27 July 1918, page 2:

ESSEX ROLL OF HONOUR

Capt. John Harbord, M.C., son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Harbord, of Bulmer House, has died of wounds. He was educated at Cromer, Cordwallis, Haileybury, and Clare College, Cambridge. He had served on various fonts, and received his decoration for great gallantry while in command of his battalion in the East.

HARMAN

Edward

From the TNA WO/364, his pension documents. These appear to be all that survive. His death was a direct result of the war but occurred too late to be classed as a war death.

He Joined up for Army service on 7 Jan 1917 and was called up at Norwich from the Reserve on 7 March 1917 to serve as Private M/300551 Motor Driver with the Royal Army Service Corps. He served at home until 10 Jan 1918 when he joined the BEF to France. By December 1918 (still in France) he was diagnosed as having contracted Tuberculosis disease in his right hip but he wasn't repatriated until 23 June 1919 when he was admitted to a specialist TB hospital. On 19 August 1919 he was discharged from the Army with 100% pension as permanently unfit for service and died several months later. His death was registered in Hammersmith and no information is avaiable as to where he was buried, possibly Whittington where his father was living in 1911. No headstone was recorded either there or Northwold when surveyed by members of the Norfolk Family History Society.

Born Edward Henry HARMAN in Northwold in 1898 he was the youngest son of John Edward HARMAN and Sabina THOMPSON.

MACK

Ralph Michael

*Lieutenant-Commander, H.M.S. Tornado, Royal Navy. Died 23rd December 1917. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 20. See also Mundesley War Memorial.

Special note. HMS Tornado was a destroyer which was mined on 23 December 1917 off the Maas light buoy. There was only one survivor.

Note: At present, 4,160 Commonwealth casualties of the First World War are commemorated by name in the cemetery, many of them on special memorials. Unidentified burials from this period number 2,729.
